It's Summertime

June News.
In June we had another hectic month that brought an end to a busy but brilliant school year.
Geography
We completed our projects on Africa which tied in nicely with a visit from a past pupil of the school Jack Boland. Jack came in to tell us about his upcoming visit to Africa with Nenagh CBS. He told us about his plans to help the children there and even introduce them to the game of hurling! 2nd Class very generously presented him with a donation from their First Communion money that will help buy essential supplies there. Jack is going to come back in the Autumn and tell us how he got on.
Mad Scientists!
We had Science Day on June 13th where we got to work on 6 different areas of Science at different station areas. It was great fun-we had lava lamps, magnetic cars, dancing raisins, lung capacity experiments, planting cress and testing for starch. See photos below to experience the fun we had!
Father's Day.
Our Father's Day we had a Superman theme and created super cards for Super Dads.
Hope all the Dads out there got a chance to put the feet up and had full ownership of the remote control for the day!!!
Lunchtime Leagues
In June with the help of Eoin and Michéal from 6th Class and the advice from John Hogan we held a lunchtime league. We formed into 4 teams-Tipperary, Kilkenny, Clare and Waterford. We invited Senior Infants to play also. Over 6 lunchtimes we played matches and finally on the last week we had the big final! It was an All Burgess Final with Ballyhiskey v Ballywilliam! It was all great fun, an opportunity to introduce some children to the sport, for others a chance to hone their skills and for others again a chance to show us what skills we have already built up. There are definitely a few 'Bubbles' in the making!!
Floating a boat!
3rd class had some fun designing a boat from marla that would float on water and they had to experiment with the design to try hold the maximum passengers (dried peas!)They showed great ingenuity in design before the Titanic moment!
Sports Day
Sports Day was a wet and windy day but it didn't deter us from going ahead and having fun! We started off in the hall with some gymnastics skills that we've been working on this time with Rody Kennedy.Next up it was time for Olympic Handball followed by Lacrosse and then races in the field. Poor Grady was on crutches for the day but that didn't stop him being a good sport and cheering everybody on. Despite the inclement weather it was a great day made all the better with some help from 2 members of the local Garda Siochána who as well as being great fun, provided us with treats and medals on the day. We are very grateful to them for their generosity and we hope they will join us again next year. Thanks also to Rody and Seán who helped with all the organisation.
Our very own Emma Kennedy won then Garda Award for best participator on the day. Well Done Emma.
Ice Cream Party
We've been gathering tokens for good behaviour in class towards a mega ice cream party on the last week. Te more tokens each group got the more scoops and toppings they earned. Thankfully no group was left with plain wafers! It was a great finish to a busy but fun year in school.
Have a wonderful summer everyone. Be Safe and See You all on September 1st

May News.......Manic Mad Magic May!!!
May was very busy with swimming, hurling, birthdays, outer space, First Communion, matches, projects. Here's a small flavour of what we got up to!
May Altar
May is the month of Mary and we made a May Altar on our Sacred Space in class. We brought in lovely flowers from home everyday to keep the altar looking good. We said a prayer to Mary every morning and evening.
Hurling News
On 4th May we had a very exciting trip to Toomevara for the North Hurling Final. We went on to cheer our fantastic team of boys and girls from Ms Ryan's Class. They played a fantastic match and came out victorious. Then on the 25th May we set out again for Semple Stadium where our Brave Burgess team took on Rossmore in the county Final. We were delighted to make posters and sing songs to cheer them on and help them on the road to victory. It was a fantastic day and we were all hoarse from shouting. The team showed courage, bravery as well as skillful hurling and they lifted the trophy after the match. Afterwards we were treated to a celebratory sausage and chips in The Ragg. Food was eaten, speeches were made and medals presented. We were all excited and inspired and are looking forward to our chance at bringing the trophy home when our day will come.
Congratulations to Ms Ryan , John Hogan and of course the fantastic team.
Swimming News
3rd and 4th Class completed their set of swimming lessons in Nenagh Leisure Centre. It was fantsatic to see such progress in a few weeks. Everybody was confident enough to jump into the deep end by the last day. There are definitely a few Michael Phelps in the making! On the last day we got to have our breaktime snack in Nenagh Park and we got to have a play in the playground before it was time to go. Well Done 3rd and 4th Class -lets hope you get plenty of nice weather during the summer to practice your swimming.
May Art & SESE
A lot of our time in May went into helping 2nd Class prepare for their First Communion Day. They painted a large group picture of the chalice, bread and grapes-the symbols of the First Communion Mass. They also prepared stained glass communion windows and chalices for the seats.
We also painted some poppies as part of Art Composition. We studied the lovely red poppies that are coming out now. We used fingerprints and painted in the details to create a lovely display of dancing poppies.
We also got to finish our planets display started in April. We studied the colours and sizes of the planets in SESE class painted the papier-mache models once they had dried. They turned out really well and our corridor was adorned with work from our Space theme.
We also created some Neil Armstrong 'look alikes' in drawing class. See what you think below!
Finally we cut and glued paper rockets to complete the whole space look!
By the time we were finished Ms Quigley was only fit for Planet Mars but the corridor was resplendent with our creative work.
First Holy Communion 2016
On 29th May the children from 2nd Class received their First Holy Communion in Ballywilliam Church. The sun shone down on our superb boys and girls who did themselves proud with their singing, readings and prayers on the day. They really were fantastic and everybody was so happy and proud of them. Congratulations to Jack, Caelebh, Ronan, Conor, Diarmaid, Grady, Rena, Lily and Aine.
Thank you to all the Mums and Dads for the great help and support in preparing for the day, thanks to Fr O' Brien, Fr Fergal and Fr Kevin and to all the staff in the school who helped make the day such a happy one for us.
May you always look back on this day and remember what a special day it was in your lives.

April News
We're busy back at work in school since our Easter holidays. Here is a short summary of some of the things we've been up to.
Maths
3rd Class have been making 2D shapes with geo-strips and 3D shapes with cocktail sticks and play-doh. We've also been learning how to make interesting pictures using ancient Chinese puzzles called Tangrams.
Who would have thought that we could make so many pictures using only 7 little shapes?

SESE
In SESE we've been learning all about The Planets and Space. We now know lots of interesting facts about the planets. Here are a few of the facts we've learned.
The word astronaut comes from the Greek word which means 'star sailor'.
Jupiter is so big that you could fit all the other planets in the solar system into it.
The red spot on Jupiter is the biggest most violent storm in the universe-the spot is 3 times the size of earth.
Saturn is the second biggest planet but it is also the lighest planet.
If you could find a bath tub big enough Saturn would float on it.
The sun is not a planet but a star that is 4.5 billion years old.
We also learned about life as an astronaut and looked at some video clips of Chris Hadfield in space.
Did you know that astronauts have to be strapped into their sleeping pods ?
And their foot prints last forever on the moon because there is no wind to blow them away?
They have to speak to one another using a radio microphone when they are space walking because there is no air to carry the sound.
Art
We created a model of the Solar System using papier maché. Papier Maché is a mixture of strips of paper and paste. We stuck many layers of the papier maché onto balloons. Once dry we could burst the balloon and we were left with the hard dry papier maché shell. It was a long, messy process but we all got 'stuck' in and enjoyed the fun!We are painting and varnishing the planets at the moment and we can't wait to see our model of the Solar System on display!Check back next month for some photos!
That's if Ms Quigley hasn't taken a rocket out of Burgess to Outer Space from all this paste and paper and MESS!!!!

Spring Clean
We took to the roads last Thursday April 21st and no piece of rubbish escaped our litter detectives. Spring Clean Day is a good chance to show that we respect our environment and we play our part in keeping our beautiful countryside looking its very best. We hope that when we grow up we will be more respectful adults than those who throw litter out of cars for somebody else to pick up.
We got a lovely surprise of tasty treats from the very kind families whose roads we were on. Many thanks.
Here is a slide show with a few photographs from the day.

Fun Day Blitz for 1st and 2nd Class
On Friday 22nd April 1st and 2nd Class enjoyed a great day out! After a guard of honour by all the other classes to wish us well we boarded the bus for Dr Morris Park in Thurles for a fun day blitz. We played 4 games and showed all the other schools what tough stuff the children from Burgess are made of! There was great teamwork to be seen and everybody played their hearts out. For some people it was their first experience playing for a blitz and they had a great first game. The sun came out for our picnic lunch and after all the hard work on the field Breeda and Ms Quigley treated us to an uachtar reoite in Borrisoleigh on the way home.
Huge thanks to Padraig's Mum and Dad who helped greatly to keep everything running smoothly and to Áine's Mum and Catherine for cheering us on!

Spring Has Sprung!
We hope that February rain will make way for some nice spring weather soon.Spring is a time of new life on the farm, re growth on the trees and the arrival of some pretty spring flowers. The farmers in the class have tales of the safe arrival of lambs and calves each day.
We are delighted to see our winter bulbs finally blossoming into golden daffodils and delicate white snowdrops. We await our hyacinths which haven't bloomed yet.
Thanks to Thomás Ryan for bringing a lovely pot of snowdrops to the classroom which he grew during the winter in his tunnel at home.
In Art we studied tulips and our compositions have brought a touch of spring to our classroom. 3rd class learned how to use watercolour paints and worked really carefully to produce some beautiful paintings.
2nd class used pastels to create really vibrant pictures and 1st class used paint for their very creative masterpieces.
We came up with a cool way to make spring flowers out of paper . We used bun cases for our Spring Has Sprung display. We look forward to doing lots more spring art and craft activities over the next few months.
Wall of Fame/Handwriting Update
Our Wall of Fame for handwriting is gradually getting bigger-Conor Grace, Rena, Stephaine and Jack have been added to it in February. Well done for such improved handwriting.

Mother's Day Wishes
We wish all our wonderful Mothers and Grandmothers a very happy day on Sunday.Thank you for all you do for us.
Here is a poem just for you:
What Mums Do
Cook and clean,
Wash and fold,
Keep me warm
When I am cold.
Drive me here,
Take me there,
Mum you sure are everywhere.
School and sports,
We have such fun,
Then you're there when the day is done.
Tuck me in
To bed so tight,
This is when
We say goodnight.
Thank You for being My Mum

Valentine's Art 2016
Our Art Theme for February of Flowers And Hearts was inspired by American artist Kathy Kromer.Kathy loves experimenting with colours by combining them to make new colours. You can see our pastel drawings below.
We also made some fingerprint impressions in clay as a keepsake for Valentine's Day.
Being the Wise Old Owls that we are, we decided that our Valentines cards should have an owl theme this year! From 'Whoooooooo loves you ' to 'You're a hoot' we wish everybody a Very Flappy Valentine's Day on Sunday!!

Peace Proms Workshop 10/2/2016
We had an early start on Wednesday morning to travel to Kilkenny for the Peace Proms rehearsal and workshop. Even though some people set 3 alarms and were up at 6am nobody was tired on the bus and we warmed up the vocal chords with a few great renditions of Hit the Diff!
In Kilkenny we met with Greg Beardsell, the Artistic Director of the Irish Youth Choir and Conductor of the Cross Border Orchestra. Greg led the 1000 pupils there through the songs and entertained us with some cool beatboxing! Greg works with many international artists-last week he was working with Kyle Minogue. We met him afterwards for a photograph and he commented on how well 'the greens ' performed their songs and actions. We just need to keep up the good work this month learning the words and perfecting the moves for the big concert on March 6th. If the rehearsal is anything to go by the audience will be in for a real treat that day.
Afterwards we went bowling to K Bowling and had fantastic fun! There were strikes and high fives all round. We followed up with lunch from Eddie Rockets before taking a walk up to see Nowlan Park- the hallowed ground of 'The Cats'! After a few 'Up Tipps' and 'Boo Kilkenny' it was time to head home to the true 'home of hurling' again!!!

February 2016 Update
Lá Fhéile Bríde We learned about St Brigid in preparation for St Brigid's Day. Rena brought us in some rushes and Ms Quigley made a cross for our class as Brigid did long ago. We made our own versions in cardboard. 3rd Class SESE Projects 3rd Class presented their SESE projects on Egypt this month. They worked in groups on different aspects of Life in Egypt. They worked very hard and we all gave them a thumbs up on their presentations. Well Done Conor, Thomás, Cathal, Eoin, Tom, Stephaine and Emma. |

The man with the microphone. Great presentation! The proud winner of an Irish Dancing award. Well Done!
The twins came to visit and we were We were busy watching birds at the feeders In November we created

love who have died.
January News from our class.
We came back to school full of stories about the Christmas holidays. We all had a great break and Santa was certainly very busy around Burgess with everybody receiving lots of lovely presents. There were no bags of ashes delivered this year thankfully!!
We had two lovely teachers from Mary I College teaching us for eight days in January-Miss Bourke and Mr O' Flaherty. We had great fun learning lots of new and exciting things with them and we were very sorry when it was time for them to leave.
In Science we learned how to make a gas called Carbon Dioxide and we enjoyed watching a balloon inflate after we caused a chemical reaction! We love doing science-some experiments work out and others don't but that's the fun of science!
In Geography we've been learning about Egypt and we now know that the longest river in the world is called the Nile and is in Egypt. We learned some interesting facts about houses in Egypt-when the first son in a family gets married he builds a room on the flat roof of his parents' house. When the next son gets married he build a room on top of that and so on! We were wondering what Cathal or Tom would do if they lived in Egypt with all the boys in their families!! 3rd class are busy working on their projects on Egypt this month and we are eagerly waiting to see how they turned out at their project presentations next Friday-more about this next month!
We've started the Wall of Fame for improved handwriting. So far Conor Gorman, Tom Hanrahan and Donagh Ryan have their names on the wall. These boys have really improved their writing and their copies are lovely to look at.We hope to build a really big wall of fame over the next few months as we all work hard to try improve our writing. It is very important to have nice clear handwriting that we can be proud of. Ms Quigley says she might have to go to Specsavers soon if some people's writing doesn't get a bit bigger and then there are a few others who need to shrink their writing a little bit! If we work hard we will get it right!
If anybody is passing the school and hears 'Uptown Funk' blasting out it's because we've been learning the last few medleys for Peace Proms. We are working hard to learn the words and we've also started to learn the actions. Some of the songs are an aerobic work-out but it's all good fun and we are looking forward to the big trip to Kilkenny!!
We are back in the swing of Maths stations in January. See slide show below for some of the number games we get to play on Fridays.
Bhí breithlá mór ag Conor agus Caelebh in Eanair. Breithlá shona dhaoibh a bhuachaillí.
John gave a great presentation on the white board on mini-beasts. We all learned some very interesting facts from him. Well done John.
In Art we designed Woolly Winter Hats and we made some very friendly snowmen. See below for some pictures of our creations.
In Writing we're working on procedures in January and February. We've written some delicious recipes and the instructions for a science experiment in January. We've some more interesting procedures to write next month.
Check back next month for our next update as we look forward to Spring!

First Term in Ms. Quigley's Class
We had a busy first term here in school with lots of activities.
In October we had Maths Week which included fun Maths activities such as 'Who wants to be a millionaire?', maths board games, card games and a fun Maths trail that took us all around the school and the grounds.Check out the slide show above to see us in action on the days of the trail.
We also had great fun this term shouting on our school football team in the North and County Finals. We loved the bus journeys to Borrisokane and Littleton. We were busy making posters beforehand and we definitely think our cheering helped them to victory!!
2nd class had their enrolment ceremony for First Communion and they look forward to preparing for their special year over the next few months. More about this next term.
Everybody enjoyed the Hallowe'en Fancy Dress day and it was very hard to tell who was who with the ghosts and ninjas, pirates and witches who came to school that day! Even Ms Quigley looked a bit scarier than usual!!
In November we finished our writing for 'We are Writers' book. Everybody wrote something interesting for the book and we were delighted to see our stories and our names in print! The next David Walliams or Roald Dahl may be in our class.Congratulations to Jack Sullivan in Second Class who won the competition to design the cover of the book. Jack did a great job and may well be an illustrator in the future.
Every 2 months we work on a different writing genre. In November and December we wrote lots of different types of poems-cinquain, haiku, acrostic and pyramid. There are some very talented poets in our class.Of course we didn't forget some important letter writing in December either............. to the man in the red suit!!
December was a very busy month for us.
Cormac and Rory came to visit and were shown around the class by their very proud big brother Tom and sister Clíona.
We were delighted to see them and lots of people got to give them a cuddle!
We had lots of 'reliable robins' in class and we got certificates in school to show Santa how hard we have been working.
We had lots of songs and dances and lines to learn for our Christmas Concert. Our play was called Children of the World and the different angels took us on a journey to explore how children in different countries celebrate Christmas. Everybody agreed that we sang and danced and performed brilliantly on the night and our parents and teachers were very proud of us.
The Burgess hills were definitely 'alive with the sound of music' on the night of the Christmas concert as we also performed some of our Peace Proms songs. We have lots more songs to learn for the big concert in Kilkenny in March. We are looking forward to this next term.
We've loved doing art and Ms Quigley thinks that we are very talented artists. There are some samples of our art work below.
Happy New Year to everybody.
