Cross Country
Some of the students from 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class went the cross country in September. We got our school jerseys and left on the bus. We got there at around halve ten. We watched some of the races and had our lunches.
Then we heard a man calling 3rd and 4th class girls for the small schools race. So Rena, Áine, Kayla and lily went to the starting line. The man fired the gun and off they went. Soon we could see them coming to the finish line Lily came back with a medal. Áine, Rena and Kayla arrived shortly afterwards.
Next was the 3rd and 4th class boy’s small school race in which the following students took place; Conor Grace, Tom, Jack, Ronan and Conor Gorman. They went to the starting line again, the man fired the gun and off they went. They came to the finish line with Conor Grace receiving a medal this time, followed by Tom, Jack, Ronan and Conor Gorman.
Then 5th and 6th class girls small schools were called. So Aishling, Laura, Iris, Marie, Keeva, Lauren, Saoirse and Anna lined up. The man fired the gun and off they went. They soon came to the finish line with Aishling, Laura and Marie getting a medal. Iris Saoirse, Lauren, Keeva, Anna arrived at the finish line afterwards.
Finally the 5th and 6th class boys small schools were called. So Michael, Harry , Eamonn, Kieran and Caolan went to the starting line, again the man fired the gun and off they went. Soon they came to the finish. They all ran a good race.
It was finally over , therefore we packed up our stuff and went on to the bus. A month later we found out that the girls from 5th and 6th class came second in the group race.

Scór
In February Aishling Kennedy, Laura kennedy, Lauren Ryan, Anna Dunne and Kieran Grace entered the Scór. Anna played the concertina, Kieran played the mandolin, Laura played the accordion and Lauren played the Tin whistle and Aishling played the fiddle.
The first round of the scór was held in Portroe community hall. There was eight competitions, figure dancing, reservation, balled group, music group, question time, novelty act and set dancing.
When they called out music groups, we went into a room. We found out that we were on last. After all the other acts were finished then we went up on the stage and played our two tunes they were called the spotted dog and murphy’s slide. We took a bow and came off the stage.
When all the competitions were over they called out the results. When music group was called out our group came 3rd and we got through to the b final.
We practised for the scór on Tuesdays and Thursdays. When the scór arrived we drove up to Templederry. When the music group was called out we went into a room again this time we were on first .We played our two tunes again. When we were finished we took a bow and went off the stage. When everything was finished they called out the results, Newport came first. We got 87%. We were very happy with our scór.

Our Band Competition Win
Our band competition win started off by us having to pick two tunes with our amazing music teacher Ned Kelly. We choose a selection of polka's. We practised and practised until we got it to the best of our ability! We then geared ourselves on for our first ever band competition against Gaelscoil an tAonach, Kiladangan, and a lot more schools from around Nenagh. The competition was tight and had a lot of different varieties of music. There were to halves to this. We were first in the second, we were nervous but we knew we had a good group of musicians. We had a range of different instruments inc banjo, mandolin, accordions, fiddles, concertina and tin whistle. We all had a nervous wait until
the calling of winners. Hearing the other schools made us think negative but when it came to the end of the drum roll we had it won. We cheered, clapped, jumped and almost cried. We had made our parent's, families, friends and mostly our teachers and school proud. After all the pictures and hugs in the scout’s hall we headed down to Supermacs to have even more fun with food, soft drinks and even drinking out of the cup. We had a super evening and night but we didn’t know there was more to come.......
A few weeks later we got a call saying; Burgess will be recording on Tipp fm with Eamonn O' Dwyer on down your way and they would love for us to join them especially after our win. We stayed practising and practising until we got pitch perfect!! So off we set again to The Abbey Court Hotel to record with Eamonn O Dwyer. Eamonn interviewed Kieran Grace who played the mandolin on what happened in Supermacs the night of our win!!
Again we had soft drinks, sweets laughter and craic.
Overall the experience was great craic!! Thanks everyone for helping us on our journey.
Our band contained; Anna Dunne, Niamh Ryan, Lauren Ryan, Keeva O'Sullivan, Tara O' Donoghue, Saoirse Mc Donnell, Iris Grace, Aishling Kennedy, Laura Kennedy, Marie Ryan, Cathal Slattery, Conor Grace, Tom Hanrahan and Áine Grace.

Carol Service
On December 8th we invited the parents to the school hall to listen to all the classes play tunes, sing Christmas songs and read poems. It was a great night for all and we all enjoyed a cracking raffle, thanks to Jean O' Halloran for making the beautiful hampers and everyone who brought in raffle prizes. Also thanks to everyone who put in a fantastic effort in making a great display :-)

Who knows you better- your best friend or parents?
4th, 5th and 6th classes made a great impression on the judges and general public at The Primary Schools Science Fair held in Mary Immaculate College, Limerick, recently. Their entry entitled "Who knows you better-your friend or parent?" stirred up a lot of interest. The children had conducted surveys of various aspects about their interests and they concluded that the parents knew them best. They graphed all their results and all the pupils were most impressive in the way they delivered the information to their audience. A great day was had at The Science Fair, where they saw all the exhibitions from other schools and enjoyed explosions and experiments that had all enthralled. All the pupils were most grateful to Ms. Hehir for all her guidance with their project.
Biodiversity Fashion Show by Harry Spillett
The biodiversity fashion show was on the 30/1/17. Everyone was dressed up really well. Later on a man came with lots of fascinating animals. There was: a parrot, a rat, a giant snail, a giant millipede and a very furry rabbit. We got to touch nearly all of the animals. We also learnt that rabbits are an invasive species. Everyone enjoyed the day. We had a fashion show because we were aiming for our biodiversity green flag.

Green Schools
We were invited to the green schools ceremony to collect our fifth flag. Three students in 6th class would get randomly picked out of a hat to go to the green schools ceremony in Kilkenny with a teacher Ann Costello. When we got there we got pictures taken and got a badge and a pencil case. We then sat down and there were people from the county council giving speeches. Then we went down to have lunch which was chicken nuggets and chips. We then had desert which was profiteroles with cream. After that we went back to school and then we went home. It was a great achievement for the school to be awarded another green flag.

How I Won The Weather Competition!
On a normal day in school Ms. Hehir told us about a weather competition. We had to write about the weather. I wrote about Irish people’s reaction to the Irish weather.
When we had them all wrote out they were sent off. Two weeks later my mam got a phone call from Dublin, the RTÉ studios saying that I got to the top ten out of all the 5th and 6th class students all over Ireland.
The next week mam got another call while I was in school. The girl on the phone said I got to the top four and I had to talk on the radio on the Ray Darcy Show and tell Ray all about my essay on the weather. While I was talking to Ray he said that I had won an Ipad mini 4. I was over the moon with excitement!
Another few weeks later mam got one last phone call from Dublin saying that I had to go on the radio one more time and they will announce the winner then. While I was on the radio I could hear Daithí Ó Sé and Evelyn Cusacks voices. They were judging the competition. Next Ray announced the winner. IT WAS ME!!!
My prize for winning was to go to the RTÉ studios in Dublin and do the weather on the News on TV and go on The Today Show With Maura and Daithi and talk to them, a tour of the whole RTÉ studios, I even got on the full set of Fair City, have a night’s stay in the Talbot Hotel in Dublin and the last thing I won was a two night stay at the Delphi Resort in Mayo.
It was such a great experience and a memory never to forget!

Spelling Bee
By Tara O'Donoghue
On Thursday the 9th of February, we received a letter from easons' telling us about the spelling bee and inviting us to join. We were only allowed to send one pupil from 5th and 6th class to represent the school.
Everyone from 5th and 6th lined up against the door and Ms. McLoughlin asked us a spelling each. If you got the spelling wrong, you had to sit down. In the end, I was representing the school, Anna Dunne was my first sub and Lauren Ryan was my second.
It was the 16th of March, the big day. My mother brought me down to Cashel. It was on in St. John the Baptist Boys National School, Cashel.
I went inside the school and registered they gave me a t-shirt with the spelling bee logo on it. I put on the t-shirt and sat down. There was a few minutes before the competition started so I revised a few spellings I found hard.
The competition started at around 10:45am. They called out a person's name and they had to go up to the stage. We sat in alphabetical order so I was near the end. The spellings got harder as it went on.
I stayed in for 5 rounds. I came 15th out of 32 people. I had a great day and I'm glad I had the opportunity to participate.
