Birdhill visit
For the last few months we have linked with 5th and 6th class in Birdhill N.S. We wrote letters, emails and procedures to out penpals in Birdhill. We also skyped three times. While skyping we practiced our comhrá as gaeilge, sang a few songs, danced and talked about our different genres. On the 15th of June we headed to Newport to meet our penpals and play in the Joe Floyd tournament. It was a fantastic day and we were delighted that we got to meet our penpals. We hope that we will stay in touch. County final success!!!
Congratulations to 4th, 5th and 6th class boys who were triumphant on Wednesday 25th of May in Semple Stadium. It was 18 years since Burgess NS last won the U13 hurling county final. It was a fantastic day and the boys did themselves and the school very proud. They also made history by being the first team to ever win both football and hurling county finals in the same year. Confirmation
Congratulations to the six boys and four girls in 6th class who received the sacrament of confirmation on Friday 13th of May in Youghlara Church. SESE
Linking English and History together we found out about the seven wonders of the Ancient, New and Modern world. Each group had one ancient, one new and one modern. We presented our projects in different ways using power-point, a poster and a display folder. Margadh Bia
Bhí margadh bia againn sa chlós. Bhí a lán stallaí againn m.s stalla milséan, stalla éisc, stalla torthaí, stalla feola, caifé sa chúinne agus bialann. Chuaigh naíonáin shóisearacha, shinsearacha, rang a haon, dó agus trí go dtí na stallaí. Bhaineamar a lán taitneamh as. Hurling
U13 Hurling played in a blitz in Dolla playing Toomevra, Moneygall and .These matches were very tough but thankfully we came out on top and reached the North Final against Cloughjordan NS. On 4th of May we played Cloughjordan NS and came out on top. Next up we played Barnane NS in the county semi final. We were lucky to get the first few scores and we pushed on from there. We are now in the county final which will be held in Semple Stadium on Wednesday May 25th at 3 pm. Art
We created animal figures using clay. We first had to think about what animal we were going to create, draw an outline and finally get our hands covered in clay. We really enjoyed this some more than others. |
Camogie
The U13 girls participated in a blitz in Drom playing Rahealty, Clonmore and Dunkerrin. We played excellent and we were just unlucky to lose the blitz day final by a point. The U11 team played three matches in Nenagh against Moneygall, Carrig and Newport Girls School. We won drew and lost. The girls played excellent on both days and we will definitely be seeing these girls on the county teams in years to come. |
RK sports
Rody and Andrew have been coming into the school for the last four weeks teaching gymnastics, spike ball, hockey and lacrosse. We are really enjoying learning different tumbles, stretches and new games.

Proclamation Day
On March 15th we celebrated our proclamation day. In the weeks leading up to the day we were put into groups and given different parts of the rising to explore and create projects on. Each group had to find information about things that happened before the rising, during the rising, after the rising and the seven signatories. We also sang various songs and recited poems about the rising. It was a brilliant day full of Irish History and Culture. |

Science
In January we were learning all about the human body. The functions of different organs in the body, keeping our bodies fit and eating the correct foods. We explored the heart in great detail and we got a chance to dissect a lambs heart. We investigated the outside of the heart, the heart chambers, valves, ventricles and arteries. It was interesting to see the difference between the left side and right side of the heart. We have also been doing a lot of circuits to keep our hearts healthy. |
English (Writing Genre)
As part of our writing genre we have explored different forms of procedures. We wrote a class recipe (butterfly cupcakes) in January. On the last Friday in January we made our own butterfly cupcakes by following the recipe that we created as a class. We all got a chance to mix the mixture and some of us got the opportunity to pour it into the cupcake cases. They were delicious. We also made delicious pancakes for Pancake Tuesday. As a class we wrote out the recipe, we gathered the ingredients and made the mixture. Ms Ryan's poured the mixtures into the frying pan and let us each have a go at flipping the pancakes. Tomas flipped it so high that it hit the celling. We had great fun flipping the pancakes and then we got a choice of toppings. They were awesome!!!! |
Peace Proms
We were all up bright and early for our trip to Kilkenny some of us were up to see the sun rise so that we wouldn't sleep it in. We were all in high spirits on the trip down singing and chatting to our hearts content. We arrived in time and were shown to our seats. Our conductor Greg showed us all the positions and focuses that we need for the show our favourite focus was meerkat. We had great fun singing and dancing with other schools and we can't wait for the show. After all our singing and dancing we headed to Kbowl. There was healthy competition in each team, with strikes, spares and missing just one pin. After a great time we sat and had some food. It was such a beautiful day that we decided to take a walk up to the dreaded Nolan park. Booing and up tipp rang out as we walked along the path. It was a great day and we can't wait for the big performance. |
History
Remembering the Easter rising of 1916 is in full swing. We have been put into groups to find out facts about the seven signatories, before the rising, during the rising, after the rising and the different groups involved in the rising. As a class we have come up with various ideas which we would include in a new proclamation. |
St Bridget's day
We learned all about St Bridget and the work that she did to help the less fortunate. We made St Bridget's crosses using pipe cleaners. At first we found it difficult to make them but with the help of our buddies we all went home with Irish coloured crosses. Birthdays
We had a lot of birthdays in January but the most notably one was our first teenager in the school Tomás |
PE
In January we took a different approach to PE. Ms Ryan set up circuit training in the hall. We had to do seven different types of exercises in groups of 3/4. This was brilliant and we were wrecked after it. We also did some pilates and yoga in the hall. We found some of the moves difficult but great fun.
Hurling training is back in full swing and the pitch has dried out from all the rain over the last few weeks. We cant wait to start competing in the Under 13/11 Boys and Under 13/11 Girls hurling and camogie competitions.
Soccer training has also started with the girls as we are participating in the 5 a side tournament in Thurles on March 7th.

September to December in 4th, 5th and 6th.
Last term was a very busy one for us.
In September we participated in the cross country in Thurles. This was a great day as we came back with two gold medals (Aishling Kennedy and Michéal Ryan) a silver medal (Laura Kennedy) and bronze medal (Michael Ryan). We also won a gold medal in the 3rd and 4th class girls race and bronze in the 5th and 6th class boys race.
October and November there was great excitement in the classroom with winning both the north and county football final. We had great fun supporting the football team, travelling on the bus to the north and county finals and making banners. The boys did our school very proud by becoming the first ever team in the schools history to win the county final.
In November we completed our very own book "We are Writers" with recipes, stories, interview and poems. We had great fun writing this and we are sure that someday one of our buddying authors will be famous. We are currently working our way through the writing genres and we have written various reports and poetry since September.
December was both a busy and enjoyable month. Our classroom was busy preparing songs, dances and learning lines for our Christmas concert "the Xmas Factor". We were invited into Nenagh CBS for their production of the Adams Family. It was an excellent production. It was helpful to get some tips for our own Christmas concert. On the night we gave an excellent performance of the "Xmas Factor" burgess style. We knew from the laughs and cheers from the audience and teachers that they enjoyed the performance as much as we did performing it. We also performed dhá amhrán Gaeilge "Avicii Vs Lurgan agus Amhráin na gCupán" and gave a taster of our peace proms songs which we will be performing in the Kilkenny Hub on March 6th along with other schools from around the country.
6th Class are currently taking part in the Junior Entrepreneurship Program. The girls and boys worked very hard to come up with ideas for the dragons at the start of December and in the end "The Rising Lights" project was chosen. Our project is in full swing and we will working very hard over the next few weeks to get it up and running.
We had a great first term and we have an even busier one to come.
