Mary Mary quite contrary how does your garden grow?............
Our raised beds are looking great... But the prize for greenest fingers definitely goes to Ms Costello and Breeda... Hopefully we will have some herbs and salad to bring home before the holidays!

The day the chickens came to school to roost............
Wednesday 7th June 11:00 am.... we eagerly awaited the arival of Diarmuid's chickens born a few weeks ago to his hens at home. Diarmuid has been telling us lots about his chickens every day -when they hatched and how he looks after them. Diarmuid's older brother Ciarán brought the chicks to the classroom in a large box and let anyone who wanted hold one. The little chicks are just discovering their wings and some of them almost took to flight around the classroom. Everybody had a different favourite chick but we all agreed they were absolutely adorable.

Sports Roundup
As always we have had a busy sporting year in Burgess We love to see John Hogan our GAA trainer arrive at the door every Friday. We have made great strides in both hurling and gaelic football this year-particulrly Rang 1 many of whom never held a hurley before now. Check out the strength of Diarmuid Slattery below breaking hurleys during training!
Particular congratulations to the boys and girls in 3rd Class who represented the school in Cumann na MBunscoil competitions this term.
It wasn't the boys' years this year-we are just giving another school a chance but we'll be back....watch this space! Mighty men of Burgess are on the way!
2017 was all about the Under 11 girls who brought county glory to the school after a fantastic victory over Ardfinnan in Semple Stadium on 26th May 2017. Every girl put in a huge effort and contributed hugely to the team. Congrats in particular to the girls in our class that we were so proud of on the day-Áine Grace, Kayla Tokarska, Lily Mc Donnell and Rena Ryan.
At the moment we are in the full excitement of the lunchtime leagues -an annual event that are always fiercely contested! Junior Infants to 3rd are taking part in the Gaelic Football League and 2nd to 6th in the battle of the townslands in the hurling league. At the moment there is nothing between the teams so it's all up for grabs! We hope to have the league finals on the Sports Day.

Life In Ancient Rome
SESE topic for the month of June was Ancient Rome. We heard the story of the twin boys Romulus and Remus abandoned in the River Tiber and rescued by the wolf. According to the legend the city of Rome is called after Romulus. We learned about the slave market in Ancient Rome where slaves were bought and sold, we heard about the gladiators who fought in the arena, we heard about the Plebians, the Patricians and the Senators who advised the Emperor. Children in ancient Rome wrote on wax tablets with a stylus-slightly different to the tablets children in present day Ireland use.
We plan to stage our own Roman battle before the holdidays so in preparation for this we made shields, painted them red and decorated with gold. They look pretty cool now that they are finished.New up will be the swords known as the galdius and the galea (helmet) to protect our heads in battle!!
The Romans were renowned builders, architects and engineers. They designed some amazing buildings which can still be seen today. Ms Quigley and Jean may possibly have belonged in Ancient Rome because they helped us to design our very own Colosseum from a cardboard box. 3rd class completed the painting and decoration of it. It looks great.

First Communion April 30th 2017
Donagh Ryan, Cian Madden, John Grace, Odhrán Ryan, Padraig Ryan, Lauren Ryan, Clíona Hanrahan.
Clíona's countdown began months ago but it was finally one week to go to our First Communion Day. We spent the week before singing, preparing, learning prayers, practicing,, singing, preparing, learning prayers, practicing, singing, preparing, learning prayers, practicing, singing, ...........................
It was all worthwhile. The sun shone and the ceremony went off without a hitch. We had a fantastic celebration at our First Communion Mass and everybody agreed that we couldn't have sang or prayed any better.
Ms Quigley, the proudest teacher on the planet that day, got a great surprise with the beautiful bouquet of flowers presented to her in the church and she sends her thanks to all the families-Much appreciated.
Check out how handsome the 5 dudes are and how beautiful the 2 pretty princesses look.

The Battle Of Burgess 2017
In SESE History we have been learning about The Vikings in Ireland. We learned about their journey from Norway to Ireland in longships, about how the name Vikings in Norse language means 'pirate raid' and how they raided the monasteries in Ireland looking for treasure. Viking alphabet was known as runes and so we all got to write our own name in Viking runes. We painted a very large longship for our viking display and had a drawing class on how to draw a viking. We think they turned our particularly well.Check them out in the gallery below.
We learned about Brian Boru, the high king of Ireland who was not very happy about the vikings taking over his country which resulted in the Battle of Clontarf in 1014. King Sitric the viking leader wrote letters to vikings in other countries looking for help and supplies and so we did the same. 3rd class wrote some really good King Sitric letters. However, the fierce Norsemen were not able for the brave Irish who won the battle thus marking the end of the power of the Vikings in Ireland. Poor Brian Boru was killed while praying in his tent by a viking called Brodir.
Check out the fearsome Brodirs below.

A new experience.............story massage
On March 9th Melanie Kelly visited our class and we went to the library to enjoy some story massage with her. Melanie combines the benefits of positive touch with the creativity of storytelling. We got to try out fun massage strokes on each other like The Circle or The Sprinkle. Jean gave Ms Quigley a massage and Mrs Slattery gave Jean a massage so we all returned to class calm and relaxed and ready for a snooze!!
For any parent interested in exploring this experience for your child contact Melanie on 086 3023388

First Reconciliation 8th March 2017
On Wednesday 8th March seven very excited boys and girls from 2nd Class headed to the church with their families to make their First Reconciliation. They sang and said their prayers really well and showed how much work they had put into the preparation for the sacrament. Fr O Brien spoke to us about making good and bad choices and how we must try to make the right choices as often as possible. Ms Quigley was very excited for Thursday 9th March when 7 very wise children would be back in class having had their 'inside white boards' cleaned.
Congratulations and Well Done to Donagh, Padraig, Cian, John, Odhrán, Clíona and Lauren.

Mad March Maths!
In March we had lots of active hands-on maths that we love doing. We cut out and assembled 3D shapes,we made shapes from cocktail sticks and marla, we used geoboards and elastic bands to explore area, shapes and angles, we measured, we made square meters from newspaper, we estimated, we made noise and above all we learned that Maths is not something confined to Mathemagic for a few days a week-it is all around us and mathematical skills we learn will stand to us for the rest of our lives.

Love is in the air............ Happy Valentine's Day February 2017
All our work on biodiversity and nature inspired us to make 'love trees' for Valentine art this year. First we traced our handprint, painted it and in an amazing feat of twisting turned it into a tree!! Next up were painted love heart leaves and there you go a Love Heart Leaf Tree to bring home to the people we love

Biodiversity Rocks:
Biodiversity Day 30th January
This year we are working hard towards our Biodiversity flag as part of the Green School Programme. On January 30th a visitor to the school would be forgiven if they thought they had landed in a most unique and magical habitat as we held our Biodiverity Fashion Show. What creativity and talent was on display that day-we had fox in a box, a painted lady, spiders, frogs, fish, ladybirds, owls, hedgehogs to name but a few. Each class got an opportunity to walk on stage and talk about the preparation that went into the costume. Ms Costello created a beautiful display area in the school lobby after the fashion show to let visitors to the school see our costumes. That afternoon we had a visit from 'Wild Encounters' where we had an opportunity to get up close ad personal with lots of animals including rabbits, lizards, snakes, frogs, cockroaches, guineapigs, scorpions and a very noisy macaw! Ms Quigley left the room for the mice!!! We heard about the importance of conservation and how plants and animals depend on each other.
after all that excitement we went back to class to create our own shoe box habitats called dioramas. In groups we created our own rainforest, jungle, beach, garden, woodland and underwater dioramas. We were very happy with the finished product and we think they look great-don't you?

Grandparents Day January 2017
As part of Catholic Schools Week 2017 we were delighted to invite our grandparents to visit our school. Our grandparents play a very special role in our lives. They are very important teachers who show us how to love, how to be caring and how to share. They teach us about the past and about the importance of our environment and how to look after it.
At 1pm the school was full of excited Grans and Grandads getting a tour of the classes and we showed them our favourite pieces of work. We had the hall decorated with some art and stories about what our grandparents mean to us. Following a short prayer service we entertained the grandparent with some songs and poetry. Our class sang 'It's a small world' and recited a funny poem called 'The computer swallowed Grandma!' .Then it was time for a waltz together before a well deserved cuppa and a chat! It was a great afternoon and we really enjoyed having our grandparents in school for the day.
Thank You God for our lovely grandparents.

New Year News January 2017
SESE .....Tulips, off to Haka country and cheerios to cheer the birds.......
We returned to School full of excitement after a great Christmas break. Jack's bulb was the first spring flower in the classroom and we had a beautiful red tulip on the 20th of January. Over the next few weeks our classroom was filled with colour and scent as the tulip, hyacinth, crocus and daffodil bulbs gradually opened.
Cold winter months are difficult for our feathered friends. Check out the cheerio bird feeders we made below.
New Zealand and the Maori People were our topic of the month in SESE. We learned many interesting facts about life as a Maori and got our own chance to do some Maori carvings as they too were skilled artists. Check out some of our Maori clay jewellery below. We also designed our own Maori masks-the MaoriS carved in wood but ours were the card version.
The Maori people flew bird kites to send messages to their Gods. We designed our own Maori kites to adorn our New Zealand display.

Tom Crean-Antartic Explorer
In December we studied the life of Tom Crean and we learned about his Antartic expeditions. He was a very brave explorer from Co Kerry who always put his team mates first. His journeys into the then unknown land of Antartica took a lot of determination and courage.

Geography Update
In Geography we have studied life in Holland or The Netherlands. We now know many interesting facts about the country -the low lying land, the polders, dams and dykes, the tulips, the edam cheese, the clogs, the windmills, Anne Frank and Vincent Van Gogh. 2nd and 3rd Class are working on Geography projects which we will publish here next term.
In Art we studied a little about Van Gogh's life and his unique style of painting. We took a detailed look at 'Starry Night' and 'Sunflowers' and here are our re prodctions below. I think the paintings by our budding Van Gs could be worth just as much some day!!

In November We Remember
In November we created our Garden of Remembrance to remember people that we know who have died. We think of family and friends especially during this month and we know that they are always with us, watching over us, looking out for us and helping us.

Science Week November 2016
We love doing messy science experiements in school. What fun!
During science week we got to work on some very explosive activities. One that we all loved was creating lemon suds. It's great fun when you can work on science experiments with materials that you have at home like lemon juice and bread soda. We learned the scientific language for bread soda (bicarbonate of soda)which we now know is an alkaline and lemon juice is an acid and when they are mixed a gas called Carbon dioxide is created.
We also planted some spring bulbs that we hope will fill our classroom with colour and scent in Spring. We are keeping a diary as we watch them grow.
As part of our Fun Friday activity for Science week we had a Science Table Quiz which was also lots of fun.

November School Trip to Limerick.
We went on a trip to UL in November to hear the Cork Pops orchestra. In Music class in school we had learned about some of the intsruments of the orchestra and we had listened to differnt types of music from Classical to Jazz to Pop. On the day of the concert we got to sit right up at the front of the UL Concert Hall and see the instruments up close. We heard the orchestra play the pieces we had listened to in school and we got to sing some songs with the orchestra. We all loved the Purple People Eater song. Ms Quigley's favourite was Sing a Rainbow.
After the concert we went to to the Hunt Museum where we took part in a workshop about bees. We met the Gerry who is the Beekeeper at the Hunt Museum and he told us many interesting facts about bees before we got a chance to see a beehive up close.
After that we had a craft workshop where we made our own buzzy bees.
We certainly were 'Busy Bees' all day on our great day out.

October Art
In October we were working on the theme of Houses and Homes. In SESE we learned about different types of houses, animal's homes and houses in different countries. Did you know that the badger is a very clean and tidy animal? He keeps his sett very neat and even uses an outside toilet when he needs to!
We learned about the different people who help to build a house and we got a chance to be architects as we desigend or own houses in Art class. Check out our terrace, our semi-d's and our detached houses below.
We also did some nice hallowe' en themed art. What do you think of your draculas and silhouette pictures. We think they turned out really well.

September 2016
Welcome back to our class page as we begin a new school year. We are all settling back (gradually!!!) to school life. We miss our 'old owls' who have flown on to 4th Class and we have 11 new 'wise owls' in 1st Class -Micheál, Anna, Julia, Cian, Simon, Lewis, Evie, Joshua, Kate, Wiktor and Diarmuid. We hope you will enjoy being in our classroom.
A big fáilte arais / welcome back to Kayla Tokarska who has re-joined 3rd Class this year having spent last year in Poland. We are delighted to have you back with us Kayla.
So watch this space to keep updated about what we are working on in school over the next few months.
All Ireland Glory:
The month got off to a great start for all Tipperary fans with our hurling team winning the coveted Liam Mc Carthy cup. Some people were lucky enough to get to Croke Park for the final and the rest of us were glued to our televisions. We wore the blue and gold to cheer them on and made flags and bunting to decorate the school in the county colours. Congratulations to past pupil Donagh Maher on being part of the winning panel. We eagerly look forward to the day when Liam Mc Carthy comes visit the school. Artists at Work: We looked at the work of a very famous artist called Pablo Picasso who created some very interesting portraits. His work inspired a huge art movement called cubism which was a different way of looking at things. We saw how artists looked at the face in parts and drew one half of the face in front profile and the other half in side profile. Check out our interpretations of Cubist self -portraits below. There's definitely a Picasso of the future there. We also drew 'selfies'. As you can see from the gallery they turned out better than any selfies you could take with a fancy camera. Who needs an iphone7 when you're as talented as we are!! Between selfies and cubist portraits I think we've got the theme of 'Myself' pretty well covered this month. The Magic Finger By Roald Dahl This month we read The Magic Finger in class. We thoroughly enjoyed the antics of The Gregg family who are transformed into helpless tiny people and they have to watch as large ducks take over their house. Ms Quigley hopes nobody in our calss acquires a magic finger as she wouldn't be too keen o being turmed into a cat like poor Mrs Winters in the story. heck out our illustrations for the story in the gallery. Quentin Blake would need to watch out!!! Ag dul ag snámh Bhí an-sport againn leis an mála shámha an mhí seo. Bhíomar gléasta suas i hata snámha, gloiní snámha, bríste snámha, culaith snámha agus tuáille. An spraoi ar fad!!! The Great Burgess Bake Off Our 2 young chefs treated the class to delicious buns that they made in the kitchen with Mr Stapleton. They kept us in the dark all day about what they were up to but the delicious smells wafting up the corridor gave us a clue. The buns tasted every but as delicious as they looked. KnitWits Club. 3rd Class have started knitting and we call our knitting time 'The Knitwits Club'. Knitting is a great lifelong skill to learn but it can be a little tricky at first. In order to prevent herself from getting tied up into knots Ms Quigley enlisted the help of some adult volunteer for which she is extremely grateful. Special thanks to Jean who did trojan work in getting everything organised to get us off to a good start. This little rhyme might help you if you are knitting ah home: In the front door, round the back, out through the window and off jumps Jack. SPHE We are all unique with differences and similarities but each of us has something very big to offer to the world. In our class we shared our hobbies, what is important to us, our likes and dislikes. Check out our jig-saw which you will see fits perfectly together. September is a time to reflect and set goals-to think about what we would like to achieve this year. We wrote our goals on our arm templates. We each have very interesting and worthwhile goals. It will be fun to check back in June and see whether we have achieved them or not |
