Author of the Month : September-Julia Donaldson
Our author of the month this month is Julia Donaldson. We are enjoying reading her stories daily and we have learned some interesting facts about her life. Did you know that when she was young she had a cat that Julia and her sister thought was really a handsome prince in disguise.
Julia loves poetry and her first book was actually a book of poetry for children. This is why so many of her books have rhyming words. Her books have been translated into 50 different languages include Irish. Well Done Michael for spotting 'An Garabhán' sa leabharlann. We are keeping a survey of our personal favourite books which changes every time we hear a new story! Such is the popularity of Julia's books.

SPHE
September brings a new class with new friends and for some a new teacher so it is good to get to know some things about one another. We learned that we have many different interests, likes and dislikes. Our class is made up of all different parts that fit together to make a great jig-saw. While we are all different we all belong together in our classroom just like a colourful jig-saw.

Science 'EGGSPERIMENT'
We love doing science and this month we have been learning about our teeth. It's very topical in our room as the tooth fairy is a frequent visitor! Poor Ms Quigley will be in trouble though if the tooth fairy visits her as her next set of teeth will be false ones!!!!!
We learned how important it is to mind those molars and premolars as bits of food can get stuck in there if not cleaned properly.
We did an 'EGGSPERIMENT' to check out the possible effects of some drinks on our teeth. We put hard boiled eggs into glasses of water, coca cola, blackcurrant juice and coffee. We made some good predictions but nobody fully predicted the results.
Within one day the sugar in the juice was wearing away the shell of the egg. One week later most of the shell has dissolved. It looked more like something from outer space than an egg! The coffee and coca cola stained the eggs quite badly. We also put toothpaste on another egg and checked to see if it prevented the staining. We found that it did a little but not totally.
We learned an important lesson-what we eat and drink has an important effect on our teeth. No toothpaste will fully protect our teeth-we need to watch what we eat and drink and mind those molars!!!
Check out the gallery below to see our results.

Author of the Month: Dr Seuss
Our Author of the Month for October is the very popular Dr Seuss. Once again the boys and girls in our class searched at home and very soon the book corner was filled with his many works. We enjoyed reading a large selection of Dr Seuss books and learning some things about his life. He was born in America. His friend bet that he couldn’t write a book with just 50 different words, and so, Green Eggs and Ham was born.He kept a closet full of wacky hats. Whenever he was stuck for an idea for writing, he’d put on a suitable hat to help the words flow.It took him over a year to write Cat in the Hat—and it only uses 236 different words! His full name was Theodor Seuss Geisel. He was not a real doctor but because his father always wanted him to become a doctor he used Dr Seuss as his pen name.
Dr Seuss was a very wise man -here are some of our favourite quotes:

We did some mixed media art based on one of our favourite books 'The Cat in the Hat'. Judging by our pictures in the gallery I think Dr Seuss could have employed any one of us as his chief illustrator and saved himself that job.
The Brown Bull of Cooley
In History this month we heard the sad story of the Brown Bull of Cooley, the greed of Queen Maeve, the bravery of Cuchulainn and the sad end for the 2 mighty bulls of Ulster and Conaught.
This is our version of the old legend.

Report Writing
We have been busy researching and writing reports for the last few weeks and we have been using the framework Tipperary (Title)
Can ( Classification)
Destroy(Descriptors)
Cork (Conclusion).......... Sorry Jean!
to help us remember how to write a good one. At this stage we have reports almost perfected so if the editor of the Nenagh Guardian is reading this and looking for some new reporters we have just the people for you!!

Stay Safe Stay Clear
In Science we have been learning about electricity and in particular how to stay safe around electricity. We learned the Stay Safe Stay Clear Code from Sparky! We were delighted to have a visit from John and Conor, electricians with the ESB who answered our many questions about electricity.
We carried out our own static electricity experiments -check out the 'mad scientists' in the gallery below!

Maths Week 2018
We love active Maths where we collaborate together to solve problems. Puzzles are a great way to develop our mathematical brains so we worked on a few this week. Who knew so many puzzles could be created using simple match sticks. We had Puzzle of the Day on the notice board and the staff also had a daily riddle to solve! Their poor old brains are not what they used to be so a riddle a day was good exercise for them!!
We also love our Kahoot quizzes each one of us trying have the 'fastest finger first' on the iPad! We visited all the classes gathering data for our graphs and pie charts which was fun! We played some interactive games on Mangahigh and took part in a Maths trail on the day of the Hallowe'en holidays. All in all a busy busy week!

Autumn Walk
We are so lucky to live in a beautiful area where we can experience the wonder of nature right outside our door. We set off on an Autumn Walk on a glorious, sunny October afternoon to open our senses to the beauty and colour of the season. We had an Autumn Hunt Checklist to keep us focused. 2 nature detectives Thomas and Shane even spotted a squirrel on the walk! Thomas has 2 hedgeogs in his garden named Tommy and Shane!

Magic, Madness, Mayhem, Maths and Magnificent Cakes.........
It's Hallowe'en 2018!
25/10/2018 dawned-nothing special on the calendar but what a day it was for us in school. For one day only our school was invaded by witches, ghosts, dead unicorns, ninjas, dead surfers, cats, devils, vampires, pumpkins, werewolves to name but a few. We even had a few celebrities visit also-007 , Harley Quinn and Marty Morrissey (Not the same person!!!!)
So Ms Quigley had the gruesome task of settling these ghoulish creatures down to work for the day! And what a task that was!
We had delightful cakes for break times thanks to the star bakers in Ms Mc Loughlin's Class who outdid themselves with their mouth watering creations. We also had our Maths trail to mark the end of Maths Week 2018. Check out the slide show below.

In November We Remember
Every November we remember people who have died but were very special to us in life. We made a tree of remembrance to reflect on their lives and to let them know that we have not forgotten them.
A Visit from the Mighty Men from Burgess 9/11/2018
We were delighted to have a visit from some past pupils and members of the victorious Burgess Senior hurling team who secured the clubs first ever senior championship title with a win over Moycarkey Borris in the Seamus O’Riain final . Ms Costello must have introduced the 'camán agus sliotar' at a young age to Stephen, Pat and Donagh and she was proud to introduce her past pupils to her present pupils.
The players spoke to us not only about the joy of achievement but also the heartbreak of loss and the importance of perseverance and never giving up. They emphasised how we should all commit to something-be it sport, music, school work and listen to the adults in charge who are their for your good.
Inspiring words from inspirational sportsmen.
There was time for a questions and answers session before an opportunity for a photo with the silverware.

Science Week 11th -18th November 2018
We love science in out classroom and during science week we tried out lots of investigations. We predicted which egg might be raw and which was hard boiled. We had to soin the eggs to see which egg would spin and which wpuld wobble. We learned about the centre of gravity in the raw egg and how that causes a spinning motion. We investigated how to make an egg float in water by adding salt. This led us to learn that salty water is more dense than tap water.
We had good fun with a ping pong ball and a hair dryer trying to keep the ball suspended mid-air. Lots of people managed this with Shane being a real scientific magician able to keep 2 balls suspended! We learned that if you position
the ball carefully, the air flows evenly around each side of the ball. Gravity pulls the ball downward while the pressure below the ball from the moving air forces it upward. This means that all the forces acting on the ball are balanced
and the ball hovers in midair.
As if that wasn't complicated enough Ms Quigley then introduced an empty toilet roll carton. When we held that over the ball the air is funnelled into a smaller area, making air move even faster.
The ball was forced through the carton and out the other end!
Lots of hands on activities, talk and discussion, ideas and predictions leading to a very successful Science Week 2018

Times Past-Bronze Age Presentation 30/11/2018
After two months of preparation we were ready to unveil our Times Past project showcasing some aspects of the lives of people who lived during the Bronze Age in Ireland. The crannóg was roofed (Tks to David's Dad for his help), the clothes were made. the jewellery was crafted, the tapestry was woven..we were ready!
On the day our halla was packed with Mums, Dad, Grandparents, friends and neighbours all waiting to see what this was all about.
After some interesting interviews with children who had time-travelled backwards into the Bronze Age era the visitors had opportunity to speak with us and view our work. Then it was time for everybody to come into the cinema in our classroom for the premier of our i movie-'Times Past' starring all the pupils of our school. Lots of Oscar worthy performances!
I think it is safe to say that our specialist topic in history from now on will be The Bronze Age!

Shoe Box Appeal
As always the pupils of Burgess NS never forget about those less fortunate than ourselves and this year we sent off our Shoe Boxes jam packed with gifts and treats that will give the recipients of the Team Hope appeal a great Christmas. It is a chance for us to reflect on how much we have in comparison tp others who share our world. Would we be really excited to get a new clean pair of socks or a bar of soap. Yet there are other children in ouir world for whom this is a huge luxury.

Mí na Nollag 2018 .....................................HO HO HO !!
There is nowhere busier or louder or crazier or more exciting than a school in December! Well possibly The North Pole but we haven't been there yet to compare!
We had a busy month preparing our entry for the Christmas Tree festival in St Mary's, Carol Singing in Nenagh, a visit to Ashlawn Nursing Home, and a Carol Service in Ballywilliam Church. We had to also find some time for some Christmas art and the Christmas tests. And of course Christmas is never complete without a magical gingerbread house.
Thankfully Ms Quigley had a great Christmas elf to help out called Seána Grace! We were delighted to have Seána back with us-she was always a great worker when she was a pupil in our school and that hasn't changed a bit as she got stuck in and helped out with each and every activity.
Go raibh míle maith agat Seána.
On the week of the holidays we heard the sad news that our fondly remembered friend Peggy Hurley had passed away at the great age of 102. Peggy visited our school age 100 to raise our Green Flag and tell us about life as she remembered it when she was in school. She was also our VIP/Guest of Honour for our Centenary commemoration in 2016. Peggy's family requested that we would sing at her funeral mass so we were more than happy to do our friend proud for one last time. Rest in Peace Peggy.
The day of the holidays finally arrived and it was time to say goodbye until 2019.
Ms Quigley presented everybody with a Reliable Robin certificate to be left out for Santa to see that we had worked hard in school Term 1.
Wishing everybody a magical and fun-filled Christmas and a happy and healthy new year.
Eanair 2019
Back to school with no trace of the January blues as we hit the ground running with lots of activities!
Stopping by Woods by a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost is a well known poem that we read before painting our own snowy woods. We were working on creating shadows and perspective and we are very happy with how our paintings turned out. Check them out in the gallery below.
Is breá linn Gaeilge in ár rang agus ta gach duine ag déanamh sár-iarracht an teanga a úsáid le chéile. Gach lá déanaimid comhrá beirte agus glacann gach duine páirt.
Bhí siopa éadaí againn sa rang i mí Eanair agus chuamar ag siopadóireacht go minic!
Scríobhamar scéalta iontach freisin ag deireadh na míosa.
In SESE we worked on the arrival of the Norsemen from Scandinavia to Ireland in 795AD. We learned about how their longships that sailed into the black pool on the east coast of Ireland 'Dubh Linn' which we now know as Dublin. We explored the Dublinia interactive material online and learned about life in a Viking village. We heard that Waterford and Wexford are bnamed after the majestic fjords or inlets of the sea that Norway is famous for. Jean told us about the Norweigain names that still exist in Cork from the arrival of the Vikings to Ireland. Of course we also heard about the many fierce battles that the Vikings were responsible for including the Battle of Clontarf in 1014 bewteen the Brian Boru High King of Ireland and the Viking army led by Brodir. This battle which lasted from sunrise to sunset resulted with 10,000 men killed including Brian Borus who according to some records was killed in his tent after being victorious againt the might of Brodir.
Check out our fearsome Brodirs below.

Science in February
Materials have been our focus in February -we collected, sorted and classified materials. We investigated which ones dissolved in water, which ones were waterproof and would make a good damp couse, which ones were absorbent, opaque, translucent, rigid, flexible but the highlight for lots of us was figuring out what materials were in nappies (apart from the obvious of course!!!!)
We took a nappy apart and found some crystals which are really a substance called polymer powder. This polymer powder can absorb huge volumes of water as we found out in our investigation. This is what makes it such a useful material in a baby's nappy!
Did you know the same product is used to make fake snow!
Check us out below during our science investigations.

Fish for a Wish Buddy Friday and Golden Time
In our school we believe in rewarding good behaviour so we have reward charts in our class where we can fish for a wish after 15 stickers. In the fish bowl there are seat passes, homework passes, computer time and golden time passes. Ms Quigley loves when we go fishing because it means she has spotted us being good many many times.
There are no sharks in the fish bowl only good fishes with wishes!
On Fridays Ms O' Dowd takes people for Buddy Friday activities in her room -without minutes the tantalising smells waft from the kitchen and we know we can look forward to seeing some delicious delights from her class.
Shane got to build some lego during his golden time recently-Shane's Dad is a builder and it is clear to see that Shane has the skills and talent for building also.

Streetsmart
On 8th February , we took part in the Road Safety Authority’s “StreetSmart” workshop. StreetSmart is an initiative from the RSA which aims to bring issues of road safety to life for children. During the day the school hall was transformed into a townscape with buildings, roads, traffic lights and zebra crossings etc. We were given roles within this interactive learning experience and received a Safety Licence on completion of the workshop.
Remember in our class everybody except Ms Quigley and Jean should be in booster seats in the car to keep safe! !

First Reconciliation 2019
Another year another group from 2nd class busy preparing for their sacraments this year. in 2019 it's the turn of Eoghan, Michael, Adam, David, Kuba, Alisha, Holie, Doireann, Emily, Ciara and Tara. This group have been so busy learning their prayers, hymns and words for the Zacchaeus play.
Reconciliation is a chance to 'clean our white boards' and start afresh making a good effort to always think before acting.
Fr O' Brien and Fr Jones gave us great help and encouragement along gthe way and everybody showed that they had prepared really well on the big night.
Next big day for us is May 19th when we will receive First Holy Communion.

Márta
'March many weathers' as the old saying goes and this March we had sun, frost, rain, wind and even a dusting of snow. We have been learning facts about the weather in SESE.
Did you know:
if you see cows lying together a storm is coming;
when birds fly low bad weather is on the way;
if a dog is eating grass the weather is going to change;
and a red sky at night-shepherd's delight-red sky in the morning-a shepherd's warning.Congratulations:
Confirmation Congratulations:
Congrats to our friends in 6th class who received the sacrament of Confirmation on March 8th. One of the lovely things about being part of a small school community is we get to share and take part in one another's big events. We were delighted and proud to sing and play music for Cathal, Conor, Eoin, Thomás, Tom, Stephaine and Emma. All the preparation over the past few months paid off with a great celebration worthy of the important occasions of Confirmation.Bishop Fintan even tweeted about us that evening!
Sports and History trip:
On March 5th we attended Nenagh College for an indoor hurling blitz which we always enjoy every year. With the GAA season round the corner this is a good chance to dust off the hurleys and get ready for some mighty clashes ahead! We played 4 matches with Kildangan school in a mixed fun non-competitive blitz. After that we walked in the lovely spring sunshine to Nenagh castle where we got a tour of the old Norman keep. After hearing about the history of the castle from Kevin we climbed the steps to the top for a wonderful view of Nenagh and the surrounding Silvermines mountains. We tried to imagine how different the view would have been in Norman times.
After the tour of the castle we went to Nenagh heritage centre to hear the sad history of Nenagh jail.During the 1840's Tipperary had one of the highest crime rates inthe country and it was necessary to build a jail in the town. Built in 1840 it held thousands of prisoner's until its closure in 1887.Shortly after the prison closed in 1887, it was taken over by the local Sisters of Mercy and used as additional classrooms for St Mary's Secondary School. The Heritage Centre then opened up in the building to visitors in 1984.
We enjoyed the look at the old school room, the kitchen, grocery shop and bar.
Following all that history we walked to Easons to trade in our vouchers for Book week.
Exhausted but happy most people were happy to read their new books in the bus on the way home.
Check out the slideshow for some memories of a fun day!

Best Grandparents EVER!! It's Grandparent's Day 15/3/2019
Every year we are delighted to extend an invitation to our Grandparents to spend an afternoon in school with us. We opened proceedings with a short prayer service to thank God foe the gift of Grandparents and to remember those who could not be with us or those who have passed away. Then we entertained our Grandparents with poems, songs, music and dance. We were thrilled that Grandad Tomás brought his tin whistle and showcased his musical talents with a lively reel and polka. It's great to see his talent travelling through the generations to his 5 grandchildren in our school. Next up was a spot of waltzing followed by a cup of tea and treats provided by the brilliant bakers in our class.

Plastic Free 4Schools Workshop 27/3/2019
We were honored to be one of the first schools in Ireland to engage in the Plastic Free Workshop this month where we learned all about ways we can reduce the amount of plastic in our world. This fits in nicely with the Global Goals for 2030 we have been busy learning about in preparation for our next Green Flag on Global Citizenship.
The steps we have decided to take in our school are
No Straws,
No Single Use Water Bottles and
No Plastic Packaging on lunches.
Small steps that could make a big difference.

Mother's Day 2019
Whether you call her Mammy, Mum, Mam, Mamaí, Mom she is one of the most important people in our lives. Where would we be without our wonderful Mums who spend their lives looking after our every need. Mother's Day should not be the only day we thank Mum but it is a chance to spoil her and tell her how much she means to us.
Check out our lovely Mother's Day crafts that we were delighted to bring home this year.

Spring Walk 2019
With beautiful spring sunshine and the thought of holidays and easter eggs round the corner we had an extra pep in our step for the last fortnight of term. We went on a lovely spring walk in our beautiful locality and spotted buds on trees, daffodils, primroses, bluebells, ladybirds, blossoms, birds building nests and generally many signs that nature is wide awake after the winter. Just in case it wasn't totally awake Diarmaid whistled a blade of grass as a spring alarm!
Check out our lovely spring images in the slideshow below.

A Very Busy Day 10/4/2019
We were blessed with a beautiful morning to start our busy busy day before the Easter holidays. First up was a bus to Kilcolman for fun hurling blitz run by the GAA in conjunction with The Garda Síochána. Some of our class were up at dawn practicing their free taking skills and were ready to play their green and yellow socks off!
It was a wonderful morning, we hurled, we met some Gardas, we got a look into the Garda van but the the highlight of the whole morning was undoubtedly getting to meet Tipperary star Paudie Maher and current Tipperary coach Tommy Dunne. Our Tommy may even have given the big boys a few tips for the months ahead!!!
We were all star struck and some even rendered speechless to meet their heroes.
Many Thanks to Paudie Malone and Garda Maureen Finnerty for the wonderful morning.
A quick lunch on the bus followed by an even quicker change of clothes and brush through the hair to be ready for the annual Music and Dance display. We have been working really hard over the past few months on our tunes and dances and as always under the expert guidance of Marie and Kathleen a wonderful display was enjoyed by all our guests.
It really was 'THE GREATEST SHOW'.
Sincere Thanks to our music and dance teachers for their patience and kindness to us all year.

We saw a busy return to school with preparation for the First Communion on May 19th. 3rd Class started swimming classes, we enjoyed a Drumming Workshop, GAA training with Shane,Be a Dancer for Cancer Fundraiser, RK Sports on Wednesdays and then of course we had to fit in all our usual daily activities.
We started work on 'Na Tri Muicíní', that we hope to have ready to perform in the hall for the other classes in June.
Some of our talented musicians were busy preparing for the Fleadh Cheoil in Ballina on 18th and 19th of May. We are very proud of the young participants from our class who performed so well across a range of events.
Congratulations to Micheál, Evie, Diarmuid, Cian and Katherine.
Special mention to Katherine our youngest winner in 1st Class who won the U 9 tinwhistle competition and to Diarmuid who won the U12 fiddle and U 12 Grupa Ceoil, We are so proud of you all, MAITH SIBH.

Be a Dancer for Cancer Fundraiser
We were delighted to take part in the National Day of Dancing for #DareToCare in aid of the Irish Cancer Society. At 11:45am we all left our classrooms and gathered together to dance to Walk The Moon's 'Shut Up And Dance' showing off some pretty cool moves in Halla na Scoile. Check us out in our Slideshow below. Our school was proud to send a donation to the Irish Cancer Society for this worthwhile cause. |
First Communion 2019
May 19th dawned and after all the months of singing and praying and practicing we were ready for our First Holy Communion. Excitement was at fever pitch for our 11 communicants who looked absolutely amazing on the day.
The girls were like princesses in their white dresses and who knew the boys could polish up so well? They looked so dapper and handsome -without a hair astray!
The sun was shining and we were ready.
Ms Quigley was the proudest teacher on the planet (and perhaps the entire solar system if it turns out that there are any other teachers out there).
The 11 children in 2nd class could not have shone any brighter than they did on Sunday and that was what Ms Q asked of them last week-to be a star and let your star shine.
A Big Thank You to 2nd Class Parents from Jean and Ms Quigley for the beautiful cards, gifts and bouquets of flowers. We appreciate your thoughtfulness and generosity very very much .
Maith sibh Rang a dó-bhí sibh go léir go h-iontach ar fad !!
Wishing Tara, Hollie, Ciara, Doireann, Emily, Alisha Jakub, David, Adam, Michael and Eoghan every blessing for your Furst Communion and always and we hope you will always look back with the happiest of memories on May 19th 2019.

What planet are we on ???
We are greatly enjoying our SESE topic this month on The Solar System and learning about the amazing universe we live on. It is hard to get our heads around the vastness of space so we are doing lots of research and learning lots of interesting facts coupled with some Art and Craft activities to create our Solar System display area and some funny songs to help to learn about the planets.
We had great fun withe the marbling paints to create some lovely effects on our planet paintings. We are making our own model of the solar system using a technique called papier-mache so watch this space to see how it all turns out.
Quite simply Ms Q expects that it will be out of this world!!!!!!!!!
Check out the slide show below of our display in progress

Pen Pals 2019
3rd and 4th class were learning about how to write a letter using the the correct format in English writing class so Ms. Quigley set up some pen pals for them with her friend Ms Ryan's class. We were extremely excited last Friday to get letters back from our new pen pals in Galway. It was such fun opening the envelopes and reading all the news. In our instant Snap Chat, text-filled electronic world it is lovely to enjoy the simple gift of a writing and receiving a handwritten letter and we hope that maybe the friendships will continue over the next while -or at least until The Premier meet The Tribesmen in the 2019 Hurling Championship!!!!!!
Check out the excited faces from 3rd and 4th class below!

The Liam Hogan Hurling Tournament in Kildare.
The mighty Burgess boys travelled to Co Kildare recently to take part in the Liam Hogan inaugural tournmament. Liam was a proud Burgess man who grew up locally and then lived his adult life in Kildare.
Liam passed away last year and this tournament was held to honour his memory. Liam's brother John has been our hurling coach in school for many years so there was great joy as we were victorious in bringing the silverware back to Tipperary. Congratulations and well done to all who took part and particularly Micheál in 3rd class who was one of the youngest players there.

Rinneamar ealaín bunaithe ar an scéal freisin agus dúirt na múinteoirí go raibheamar go h-iontach ar fad!

Swimming is over for 2019
3rd and 4th had their last swimming lesson on 18/6/2019 so Ms Quigley planned a little surprise for the class. Fr O' Brien had a local history tour organised and planned for us but unfortunately due to circumstances outside of his control it did not happen. So instead with the sun shining warmly on us we set off on a walk along the banks of the Nenagh river walking from the Birrisokane road to the Dublin road taking in the sights and sounds along the way. By the time we got to the pool we were more than eady to dive in and nobody was complaining about the cold temperatures that day! We had a fun filled hour in the pool with people sprinting along ruber mats in the pool, diving into the deep end and relaxing on giant floats. Every single person made huge progress so we say thanks to the swimming coaches for their great work with us.
After that our very patient bus driver gave us 15 minutes play and picnic in the park.
Check out the slideshow below for some pictures of the day.
