COVID 19 Plan for Return to School September 2021
We were successful in implementing an effective COVID 19 School Response Plan last year and we want to ensure a safe reopening of schools for staff, pupils and their families this year.
Most children will be looking forward to going back to school and will feel happy and excited. Some may feel a little anxious about returning. That’s a normal response at a time of change. Most will settle back in soon once they get used to the new rules and routines.
The Department of Education have prepared some guidance for parents on how to support our safe re-opening.

Ireland Reads Campaign
Ireland Reads is part of the national Keep Well initiative, and will encourage everyone to discover the joy of reading and participate in a national day of reading on Thursday, 25th February. It’s all about promoting the power of reading for enjoyment and wellbeing – combatting lockdown by encouraging people to get into a habit of regularly setting aside time to sit and read a book, a poem, a comic, a newspaper, whatever works for them.
Research shows that children who read a lot when they are young are more likely to become lifelong readers and gain significant knowledge along the way. For adults, studies have found that reading for pleasure enhances empathy, understanding of the self, and is effective in combatting loneliness. In a year when we have all been searching for new ways to break out mentally from our daily routines as well as connect with others we can’t meet right now, reading offers a way to escape, to lift our mood, and to take part in a communal experience we can share across our household bubbles.
Find out about all that’s happening for Ireland Reads, get book recommendations and take the pledge to read here.

Plaque of STEM Award- Comhghairdeas Buirghéas
We were delighted to receive news recently that our school achieved a SFI Discover Science and Maths Award for the 2019/2020 academic year. We had been working on this award in class before the school closure and the children continued to work weekly in Science during the school closure. To receive this award we had to submit a log of evidence of the children's engagement with STEM in the areas of :
Science
Technology
Engineering
Maths
Here is some feedback from the adjudicator to our school:
'Well done on achieving your Plaque of STEM Award. You have displayed a wide variety of STEM skills, including problem solving, group collaboration and have encouraged creativity amongst your students. This is evident from the range of individuality in the projects carried out. I really enjoyed the continued learning of STEM at home during the school closure . The school Crannóg project was extremely unique and I really enjoyed how the learners interacted with this project. it is fantastic to see how much was achieved in a smaller school-great accomplishment!'
Our school tuned into the online award ceremony on Friday November 20th via Zoom and we were very proud to hear our school being called out and to see our name on the screen .
A huge thank you to Ms. Costello for her enthusiasm and initiative in spearheading this project from the start, completing the application process and submitting the log of evidence for review. No small feat during what turned out to be an exceptionally challenging academic year.
We plan to continue our work in this area again this year and renew the award for 2020/2021.

The award recognises the whole school involvement, commitment and engagement with STEM. In order to achieve this award pupils engaged in

•Estimating and measuring
• Analysing (Sorting, Classifying, Recognising patterns, Interpreting, Recording and Communicating).
It also gave them the opportunity to apply the skills of

Míle Buíochas Rang 3
Sincere Thanks from the Principal and Staff of The Children's Ark School University Hospital Limerick to Rang 3 who donated the generous sum of €125 following their First Holy Communion. A small gesture from our school to their school which meant so much to the staff and children who were delighted to purchase some new books with our donation. The Principal there sent the class a lovely email to say thanks and we were delighted to receive the Thank You Card below from the school also.
We have a nice custom in Burgess NS of making a voluntary donation every year following the First Communion to a different charity-a small gesture which reminds us of the importance of sharing and thinking of others less fortunate than ourselves.

Welcome Back
We are delighted to be back to school and see all our pupils again. We hope everybody has settled back well and had a good week. We had a busy week adjusting to new routines and procedures but all the teachers are very happy that public health guidance is being correctly followed in our school. Children are really super to use the sanitisers and adhere to the hygiene procedures that we have put in place. We will keep up this very important effort in the weeks and months to follow.
A few points of information:
If your child brought home rental books this weekend please cover and label as directed by the child's teacher-these will be your child's books for the year and will not be shared with other children-it is important that all books have plastic covers this year that can be wiped clean by the staff as required after school. This is the same for copies-all copies must have a plastic cover this year. Please return the books and copies (if your child brought them home on Friday ) to school on Monday.
Just a reminder that pencil cases rulers etc are being left in school this year to minimise bringing items from home to school. It will be helpful to have another set at home for use there when required.
Your child brought home an emergency contact list on Friday for your attention -we need to ensure these are up to date. Please return to the school on Monday.
As always thank you for having your children so well prepared for school .
More school information will follow next week regarding extra curricular activities.

A huge Thank You to Becky who has worked tirelessly since the painters moved out cleaning and disinfecting every surface of school. We are indebted to her for her time, energy and hard work.
