Swimming Classes
1st, 2nd and 3rd class recently completed their block of swimming lessons in Nenagh pool. All children really gained in confidence over the few weeks and we hope that you have learned some valuable lessons about water safety that will stand to you over the summer.
On their last day the children enjoyed a picnic and playtime in Nenagh playground followed by a trip to the library where they were given a tour by librarian Margaret and had an opportunity to register for the Summer Stars reading initiative.

Thank You Siobhán 17/6/2022
As the school year draws to an end we wish to say a sincere thank you to Siobhán O'Leary for her time with us. In our busy and sometimes frenzied world it is important to take time to pause , breathe and reflect. Every week Siobhán taught us how to do just that as well as guiding us us through our paces in a wide variety of yoga poses. Thank you Siobhán and we look forward to continuing yoga again next year.
Green Flag
We were delighted to welcome Ciardha Maher to school to raise our latest Green Flag. Ciardha, a past pupil who has achieved great success in both the academic and sporting fields. Ciardha has been very generous with her time helping us out this year and is a great role model for our pupils,
Go raibh maith agat Ciardha.
Go raibh maith agat Ciardha.
Visit by Pádraic Maher 30/5/2022
On May 30th Mrs Long had a huge surprise for us in school as we got to welcome Tipperary hurling hero Paudie Maher to Burgess. Paudie signed hurleys and helmets and took each class on a short training session. Our goalkeeper David stood in for the ultimate test and blocked a rocket from Paudie from going in the back of the net! See photos in the slideshow below.
2nd Class supporting Children in Ukraine
Thanks to our pupils in 2nd Class who donated generously from their First Communion money to help support children in Ukraine.
Through UNICEF they purchased a Super Pack which will protect and nurture 20 children. The special gift provides enough measles vaccines to protect 20 children from this highly infectious disease. It also included 200 paracetamol tablets, 250 water purification tablets, 150 bags of oral rehydration salts, 20 sachets of life-saving peanut paste and blankets.
2nd Class also purchased a Love Warmth and Nutrition pack containing two teddy bears to provide security when children are worried and afraid, a warm thermal blanket that can make the difference between life and death during cold winter nights, 30 life-saving bags of peanut paste to treat them from acute malnutrition.
There was enough money to purchase a Back to School Kit, This gift included a sturdy UNICEF blue backpack, 20 exercise books and 2 boxes of pencils to help children learn and have a good start in school. By giving children the gift of education, you will be helping them take the essential first step towards a safer and brighter future.
Second Class through your generosity you have provided nutrition, clean water, health care, education and warmth to children in need. We have been learning about global citizenship in SPHE this year. . You have shown what it means to be a good global citizen by reaching out a helping hand to those in need.

Green School Award Ceremony 19/5/2022
On Thursday last, May 19th our Green Schools Committee travelled to Athlone where they were presented with a Regional Award for work completed over the past two years on the Global Citizenship and Energy Green Flag. It was huge achievement for our school to be selected with just three other primary schools in Ireland for this award. Michael John O' Mahony, Director of An Taisce presented our proud committee with the plaque, certificate and flag at the award ceremony in the Radisson Hotel, Athlone. We were told that 'the work that went on in your school stood out enormously' from the hundreds of other applications. The credit for this goes to the ';energetic force ' behind our Green Schools work= Ms Costello. Her enthusiasm and creativity is evident in the work she inspires us to complete in school.
We will hold a special day to raise our Green Flag later this month-details to follow.

A Poem for Ukraine
Alisha Mc Grath (5th Class) wrote this beautiful and evocative poem as part of a public speaking activity in Yoga recently. What a talent you have Alisha. Well Done.
In this bomb shelter I will sit
As our home was sadly hit
We have nowhere else to go
If Putin was a friend not a foe
Yesterday I saw my friend
But later on her life would end
I would cry an endless stream
Hoping that it was all a dream
In this bomb shelter I will sit
As our home was sadly hit
We have nowhere else to go
If Putin was a friend not a foe
Yesterday I saw my friend
But later on her life would end
I would cry an endless stream
Hoping that it was all a dream
Ag iománaíocht le Chiardha
We are delighted to welcome back past pupil and Tipperary camogie star Ciardha Maher to our school every Wednesday to help our future stars develop their skills. Not only were we awarded the flag for our efforts but we were chosen as a regional winner for our work on the theme. See excerpt from the email below:

Supporting Children and Young People-NEPS
Talk and images of countries at war can be very upsetting for children and adults. It can threaten their view of the world as a safe and predictable place. It can cause different reactions and emotions with some children and young people being more affected than others. NEPS- the National Educational Psychological Service have provided some guidelines for parents to support children who may be finding the current news headlines distressing. Covid Response Plan Update Feb 28th
As a result of the latest advice from the Government mask wearing is no longer compulsory but will become a personal choice if children wear masks or not.
We will continue to advocate good hygiene and vigilance and we ask that pupils continue to use the hand sanitiser available throughout the school.
We also ask that parents continue to support us in keeping the whole school community safe by monitoring their children for any signs or symptoms of COVID 19 and to continue to act responsibly in following the current public health guidelines from the HSE.
We are very grateful for your response to all of our safety measures which have been very successful to date.

Some of you will remember the Bronze Age project we completed in school in 2019 in conjunction with the Artist in Residence Scheme with Tipperary Co. Council. Helping your child with Irish at home.
Many parents would love to help with Irish at home and are revising their own cúpla focail as they help with Irish homework. As with any language the more it is spoken the easier it becomes. If we wish to preserve our language and culture the children need to hear and use Irish out of the classroom. Click on the link below for a useful resource for any parents who would like to use a few words and phrases at home.

COVID 19 Plan for Return to School September 2021
We were successful in implementing an effective COVID 19 School Response Plan last year and we want to ensure a safe reopening of schools for staff, pupils and their families this year.
Most children will be looking forward to going back to school and will feel happy and excited. Some may feel a little anxious about returning. That’s a normal response at a time of change. Most will settle back in soon once they get used to the new rules and routines.
The Department of Education have prepared some guidance for parents on how to support our safe re-opening.
The latest public health advice (September 2021) on returning to school is available on

School opens after the Summer break on Wednesday September 1st at 9:00am. We look forward to seeing all the familiar faces and we welcome the new Junior Infant class of 2021/2022.
Good luck to all past pupils starting Secondary School this week also. We wish you well for the coming year.
