'Happy Campers' with Ms. Quigley & Jean
Meán Fómhair 2022
After a wonderful fun-filled summer we were all happy to return to school to begin the new year. We miss our 'old ' 3rd Class who were such good role models last year. We know they will go on to do great things in the Senior Classroom. We are delighted to have 11 new faces in 1st Class all well ready to take on the challenge of the Middle Clasroom. Welcome to all of you and a Big Burgess Fáilte Romhat to Emily who has joined our class from her previous school in Dublin. We hope you will all be really happy with us and we look forward to a busy and exciting year ahead.
In Our Class You'll Fit Right In
There are 30 unique people in our classroom everyday and each one of is an important paty of the large jigsaw puzzle that makes our class. We all have different interests and together we make for a colourful class.
Mé Féin
With our theme of MÉ FÉIN in Irish we did some mixed media self-portraits and some mini framed portraits! Don't they look great? The mixed media art work was very messy and lots of fun and Ms Quigley resembled some of the wildest people after the class with bits of wool in her hair and glitter on her face- a typical arty Friday!!!!!
An Autumn Walk
On a bright September day we took off for an Autumn walk in our beaautiful environment. Armed with a checklist we had to keep our eyes and ears open. We spotted many of the fruits of Autumn and the highlight was of couse the stopover outside Joe's house for conkers from his horse chestnut trees and treats from his Nana and Auntie.
Artefacts Day
In History we have been learning about the time when we were young and how we have grown. WE were very excited to have artefacts day when we brought in a great array of interesting items- we described our artefacts to the class and said why they were important. It was great fun and really interesting.
This Man City fan made their match programme for hire 1st birthday! Her Liverpool friend isn’t too impressed!!!!!!
Look how much we have grown...... we all fit into these clothes when we were much younger!
Shoes now and at 10 months old!
Off to the Cross Country 29/9/2022
Our super 3rd class have been training hard for the month of September and represented us at the Tipperary School Cross country competeition in Thurles. Well done for participating and running so well on the day. We hope that this will be the first of many opportunities for all our class to wear the Burgess school jerseys this year.
Celebrating success
We love to hear of our talented pupils making the headlines outside the classroom and we share their success with them in school. This young star is a member of the Musical Theatre Academy in Nenagh who achieved All Ireland succes with their stage show in Cork recently. What an achievement- Comhghairdeas 👏
The future of Tipperary hurling is looking bright with these young stars ✨ who have just finished a terrific summer season of hurling.
Report Writing
In September we started writing reports. A good report has to be interesting with lots of new facts for the reader. We have reports written about The Cow and Roald Dahl this month. Star ⭐️ Writers get to display their work after the final draft has been written. We hope to have 28 star writers each month this year.
Getting ready for Spleodar
We hope to send some art into the Spleodar Hallowe’en Arts Festival in the Nenagh Arts Centre. You will have to keep your eyes open around Nenagh during the festival during the midterm break if you want to see how they turned out Guaranteed to be pretty magical!
School Mass
We were delighted to be able to welcome families to our school again this year for Mass to celebrate and ask God's blessings on us for the school year ahead. Thanks to Fr O' Brien for his support to us in the school at all times.
Chrysanthemum
This month we heard the story of Chrysanthemeum which taught us an important lesson-We learned that unkind words and actions can put wrinkles on other people's hearts. We must try hard this year not to cause any wrinkes on hearts but unstead to say kind things and have hepful hands at all times.
Remember .......❤️❤️Before you speak think and be smart. it’s hard to fix a wrinkled heart ♥️ ❤️

Google Earth
Last month we were learning about our address and our locality so we tookl a trip around the area from the comfort of the classroom using the Google Earth app. It was great fun exploring the highways and the byways from Barbaha to Rosemounnt and then into Nenagh.
Tree Day 6/10/20222022
This year’s theme ‘Root for Nature’ – ‘helped us to learn about the root system of trees and also reminded us how important it is to grow more trees. One of the cleverest things that trees do is to absorb carbon dioxise and release oxygen and help us to fight climate change. With this in mind we planted some beech nuts, conkers and acorns and hope to have a young sapling to bring home later in the year.
Maths Fortnight
Maths Week starteed across Ireland on Monday 17th October. We have a number of different activities planned for the next fortnight in school in the run up to our Hallowee'n holidays. We took part in a zoom workshop on Doubles with Sally Lunt today who wrote the story book Cuthbert sees Double. We follwod up with some games with dice.
Gaelic Football Blitz 20/10/2022
Excitement has reached fever pitch in anticipation of our first outing thsi year to Kildangan GAA clun to take part in a Gaelic Football blitz. For some it will be their first time represweemting Burgess NS and we know you will wear our school colour with pride. We got in a bit of practice in school in the run up to the big day!

Orthopedic Ward in Burgess N.S.
We had great interest in learning about our skeletal system this month- so much so that we had xrays and even a knee replacement for our display in class. Ms Quigley knows where to go when her old bones need replacing!!!!
Our First Blitz Kildangan GAA 20/10/22
We were so excited to vistit Kildangan GAA for our first blitz together. The sun shone on us as we took off armed with gum shields and boots ready to do Burgess school proud. We played against Kildangan, Cloughjordan and Rathcabbin schools and everybody did so well displaying great skills, interest and most importantly respect.
Àfter that it was into Nenagh Tourist Office where Victoria gave us a really interesting talk about Nenagh and the surrounding area. We heard about the Lough Derg monster, saw the Lord Mayor's chain, heard about the ineteretsting sculptures and the H2O model, looked at a video which captured the beauty of North Tipperary where we live and sat on the famous hurley throne!!.
After all that we visited Nenagh Arts Centre next door to teh tourist office to look at the Art exhibition that is ready for the Spleodar Samhain festival. To our great delight we foud two of our artists had their work chsoen for the display. Congratulations boys.
Homes Long Ago.
We have been learning about homes in the past and how homes lomg ago are different to the houses we live in. We held another artefacts day this month and we had so many interesting things to look at , to talk about and learn about from each other.
From Alexander Graham Bell to Steve Jobs!!!
Phones past and present.
Who knows what phones in the future will be like?
A Traffic Survey
The traffic on the M7 must have got a big fright with the sight of witches, ghosts, dead princesses, dead footballers, skeletons, dead farmers, ninjas, dead hurlers and super heroes on the motorway bridghe last Friday! We have been learning about Data all week in Maths and with the nice weather we headed down to the bridge to do our traffic survey! Some people may have been counting the beeps from the lorries instead of the traffic!!!! Either way there was lots of data collection going on! what a fun way to wrap up the week!
Maths Quiz Prizewinners
We held a maths quiiz in the hall with Ms Mc Loughlin's class for Maths week. We each had the name of a famous mathematician in the past.
Who knows the next Copernicus or Archimedes may be among us at the moment?
There were only a few marks between each team-prizewinners got their prizes on the day of the Hallowe'en holidays. Well done everybody!

Peace Proms Rehearsal Nov 14th UL Arena
We have been working hard on our songs and dance moves for peace proms and it was with great excitement and anticipation that we took off to UL for our first rehearsal. We met our exhuberant and fun conductor Greg Beardsell and left even more enthusiastic and moticated for the concert in January.
Inclusion Week
'Why Fit in when you were born to Stand Out?' Dr Seuss
We had a wonderfully inspiring week this month where we met with some incredible people who told us the story of their lives and told us how they never let any obstalcles prevent them from fulfilling their dreams. We got to hear how they have travelled the world and achieved so many accomplishments in their lives. We got to learn some sign langauge and even got to try on some olympic and european medals that some of our speakers have won . We wrapped the week up with Odd Socks day on the Friday celebrating individual differences and uniqueness. The important message from the week is that we need to always see the ABILITY in disABILITY.
Science Week 2023
Always a highlight every year.....
Mí na Nollag 2022
December went by in its usual blur of paint, glitter, glue, singing, elves, , carols, crafts lists and letters. This year we were delighted to be able to hold our Chrstmas concert and no concert would be complete without a good healthy dose of Tinsel and Teatowels. We had great fun getting ready even if it did involve a little bit of 'teacher hair tearing out at times !!
We got a big surprise on the day of the dress reherasal when Santa called to visit- we gave him a good rendition of one of the songs - Tinsel and Teatowels.
It was all so well worth the hard work on the night and there were no prouder people in the hall than Jean and Ms Quigley watching our class giving 'an oscar performance ' as one of the songs went!
Well done to everybody and thanks to Mums, Dads, Grans and Grandads for the great support.

Singing for Santa !!!
Oh yes he is...... Oh no he's not.... A visit to see Jack and the Beanstalk.
Just when we thought December could't get any more exciting we heard that we were all going to see the panto Jack and the Beanstalk in the Limetree Theatre in Limerick. We were delighted to see Ella's cousin dancing and Maria's drama teacher as Mrs Giant. It was a really funny colourful show with fantastic singing and dancing and it inspired us to pull out all the stops for our own show on 16th December.
Christmas Art
Always a lovely part of Christmas preparations in school- we made clay decorations for the christmas tree, quilled chrsitams cards, painted christms scenes and used pastels and paint to make snow bears. We also used an abundance of glittter and sequins to decorate foam trees. Great fun had by everyone.
Tinsel and Teatowels- Burgess Style.
A behind the scenes look at the excitemt of our classroom on the night of Friday Dec 16th 2023!!!

Here come the bride........
We donned the Burgess jerseys and rolled out the green and yellow colours to wave at past pupil Niamh Hogan as she driove past the school coming from her wedding on a beautiful crisp December day in Ballywilliam church. Niamh's Dad John coached our school teams over the years , leading many to Cumann na mBunscoil victories in Semple Stadium. Best wishes to Niamh for a long and happy married life.
Congrats to our winners in the Christmas Tree Festival
Our December Babies- what a special Christmas your parents had the year you were born.

Peace Proms
A new year a new month and a fresh start with lots of energy after the Christmas break. It was great to hear all the news on our return to school and to hear that Santa made very exctiting deliveries to our great class.
In January we are as one boy very aptly put it one day ' Flat to the mat' getting ready for Peace Proms. Words, music, dances and even sign language have to be off by heart but there is super work going onn and everybody is singing their hearts out. We had a rehearsal for Ms Costelllo's class the Friday befroe we went to UL and one of the Junior Infants told Ms Costello that we were even better than the panto!!! High praise indeed ( unless he was referring to Ms Quigley's very dodgy dance moves!!!)
We had a long but wonderful day on Jan 29th in UL and despite being probably the youngest class there we were absolutely superb. Mums and Dads and all the teachers were so proud of each and every child.
I hope that you always keep singing and experienceing the joy that music and dance can bring to life.
Check out the slide show on the below for some behind the scenes shots as well as shots of the performance with the magician Greg who can summon the attention of more than 1000 kids with his little finger!

Pointillism
In Art this month we have been learning about the work of Geoges Seurat and his technique of using dots to create art. This is called pointillism. We explored many painting that show this technique and then of course created our own wonderful art.
After examining Seurat's painting called A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grange Jatte we reproduced our own version of this famous piece of art. We think it looks pretty dotty well !!

Making Rain
In Science we have been learning about Weather, the Water Cycle and factors that influence our weather. As if there wasn't enough rain falling we went and made our own rain fall from the clouds in Science. We had to predict how much 'rain' our 'shaving foam' clouds would hold before precipitaion happened! Check out the slideshow below for great concentration and counting!
Making Fog
We learned about how fog forms whne water vapor in the atmosphere condenses. For homework one evening Ms Quigley asked us to try to make some fog. Some were very successful some not so successful but that's science and well done for always trying.

Hands up who loves Spring?
Longer days, brigher evenings, milder weather (maybe!) baby calves, baby lambs, snowdrops, daffodils and as if Spring couldnt get any better we got to celebrate Muire nc nGael - our very special St Brigid with a bank holiday this year.
We learned about St Brigid in history and took part in a very interetsing webinar with children's author Craoline Busher who told us about many traditions and customs associated with St Brigid. One tradition involved putting a rag on the bushes outside your home on the eve of St Brigid's day and St Brigid would bless it for you. Then you could bring it back into your house and have it for the year- if you ever had a sore eye or a sore tooth you could put the rag on the sore part and it would improve.
Another legend was if you spotted a hedgehog on St Brigid's Day there was going to be a long hot summer!
Our very own St Brigid (aka Kate) brought in some fine Ballyhiskey rushes and we made crosses with 3rd Class. Some people in 1st Class were very interetsed in one old Irish legend that said if you made a little shape out of the left over rushes and put it under your pillow you would have a dream about your future husband/wife!!! I heard about very interesting deams the next day!!!

'Who Stole a Pizza Your Heart ? '
We had a lovely few Fridays of Valentine Art to get ready for the big day! Between love bursts, Snoopy dogs and pizzas the classroom and corridor was a blze of colour.
We took part in another webinar throught Wexford Education Centre with an artist called Nadia Corridan who taught us so many skills about fine art in creating a wonderfully unique valentine card.
Make sure to tell Mum /Dad/ Granny/ Grandan you love them today and thank them for all they do for you.

World Book Day
We love reading books by different authors in our classroom and DEAR time is a lovely chance to relax with a book each week. To mark World Book Day we had a webinar with a children's author who explained to us tghe process she goes through when writing a book. Then we rang the bell and the whole school including the staff Dropped Everything And Read for 15 minutes before lunch time.
Celebrating Success in our class
Delighted to see our pupils achieving success outside of school also- the boys ran home as winners at Nenagh Athletic Club recently and Kate represemted Burgess GAA at the North Final of Scór na bPaisti last weekend. Comhghairdeas.
First Confessions
Congratulations to our wonderful 2nd Class who received First Confession in Ballywilliam Church recently. It will be all good choices from now on!
A Letter from The President
Last term we were learning how to write letter s and we wrote to President Higgins after Christmas. Imagibe our delight when we saw this lovley white envelope arriving with a golden harp on the outside- the sign of the President's Office.
It is great to get a reply to your letter!

Making Shapes in March
We have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes this month. We made 3D sheps with jellies and cocktail sticks so we could count the edges and vertices. As part of our STEM learning thsi month we then had to figure out which shapes made for a good bridge structure- we had to test our bridges with a heavy weight- it was great fun with really interesting results.

Gone STONE AGE mad !
In SESE we have been the first people to arrive in Ireland about 8000 years ago who travelled the country hunting and gathering . We learned about the famlus cave painting of Lascaux in France which depict what Stone Age life was like and we made some pots to replicate the utensils they may have used.

Keeping Active
Every week we take part in a wide range of activities keeping us fit, heatthy and active as we build up our sporting skills. Thanks to Liam for giving us his time to come and work on our hurling with us.
Investigating Soil
In SESE we have been learning about soil and what it is composed of. We have been learning about the life and times of the earthworm and the less friendly New Zealand flatworm. We made a wormery in class which was great fun- worms had to be collected and the wormery prepared in anticipation of seeing the work of the earthwom at first hand.
First Communion
Huge congratulations to our fantastic boys and girls in 2nd class who made their Firts Holy Communion on May 6th. Every person was absolutely wonderful doing their jobs and saying their prayers and it was a really speial occasion. The choir sang their hearts out and we were so proud of all of you.
Gardening in the Poly Tunnel
Sunflowers
Nothing signals the start of summer than a sunflwer theme in school. We read the stroy of Katie and the Sunflowers, then learned about the work of Vincent Van Gogh and we examined his Sunflwers work in great detail. Then it was them to create our won works of art. 3rd class follwoed in the footsteps of the great artist himself using oil paints and 1st and 2nd used pastels. We think they turned out wonderful and bring a burst of summer colour into the classroom. After that it was time to elarn about what sunflwer seeds need to grow before planting our own in the promise of wonderful yellow sunflowers in August.

A Trip to the Farm
After learning about the work of the farmer we were very fortunate to be able to visit Niall, Rory and Cormac's farm in Rosemount to see at first hand the work of the farmer. Mike gabe us a tour of the milking parlour and showed us how cows are milked these days. He also showed us the tanks that store the milk and where the cows get to have a little snack of healthy nuts before while they are waiting! We got to see the calves at different stages and we observed the bull from a safe distance! After a sit in the cab of tghe tarctor and a jumop around in the trailer the boys Nanny treated us to sweets and the boys older brother Tom had a deliciour ice cream to cool us all down on the beautiful day thta it was. Thanks a million to the Hanrahan family for the gret visit.
Making Butter
We had been learnimng about how they made butter in the past and Ms. O' Dowd kindly offered to bring in her buttermaking mixer to give us a demonstration. Although their is less hard work involved now the process is the same. We were all treated to a slice of brown bread made form the buttermilk and the delicious creamy butter on top. Thnak you Ms O' Dowd.

Oceans Day 8/6/2023
We have spent a lot of time this term leaning about the Marine Environment and we were excited for our World Ocean Day Fashion Show in school. The creativity of our pupils has blown us away as each and every person took to the catwalk. From angler fish to hammer heads, from great whales to jellyfish, from bladderwrack to turtles , from mermaids to starfish every aspect of sea life was captured. It made for a wonderful celebration of our oceans. Well done everyone.
Oceans Day Artists in action
We continued the ocean theme for the rest of the day, writing the script our movie about Tom Crean, Antarctic explorer, making some clay and shell decorations and then expressing our creativity with an ocean mural in chalk outside. Check out the slideshows below to get a flavour of how busy we were.
Hey Ho Hey Ho it's off on tour we go.....
Excitement levels were through the roof on Friday June 16th as we took to the road on our first school tour in 4 years. We made our way to the Cistercian College in Riscrea for a jam-packed activity day - including dodgeball, orienteering, water slide, sponge polo, bouncy castle, soccer, puzzles and an obstacle course. The slide show below just gives a small flavour of some of the fun we had. It was a quiet bus on the way home zzzzzzzzz
Music in the 'Halla'
We gathered in the hall to play tunes for each other to showcase what we have learned this year- from polkas to Green Green Grass, from slow airs to The Wellerman from marches to Waka Waka we had every musical genre covered. After playing and listening we got to have a bop around in gthe halla!!
We hope you always enjoy music in some shape or form and this is what we aim to do in school- to introduce you to the wonderful world of music.

Nenagh Fun Day June 20th 2023
We had our last swimming lesson today and great fun was had by everyone in the poll. After that we had a picnic and play in the park before we set off on our River Walk. There we spotted buttercups, elderflower, alder, buddleia and white clover. We saw some blackbirds and thrushes also. No fish to be seen today- we think it was too warm! We saw the solar panels at Nenagh Water Treatment plant and made our way to the Borrisokane where Michael our bus driver was waiting. After that it was time to go to Nenagh Heritaghe Centre for a very inofrmative talk by Gerard. We were particularly interetsed in the old farm equipment since we had recently learned about that in SESE.
