Lá na gCrann - Spar National Tree Day - Oct. 6th
This year we received a Holly Tree to plant on the school grounds. The learning focus for Lá na gcrann was "The Importance of ROOTS ". Infants have fun looking at different leaves and feeling the veins on the leaves. They make leaf rubbings and engage in a science experiment to learn about roots and capillary action.
Infants use droppers to add food dye to the water and watch the celery leaves and carnation flowers change colour over time.
Collaborative Art to celebrate "TREES"
Each pupil colours in one page of the jigsaw and then all of the pages are put together to reveal the hidden "Wood Scene."

Maths Week keeps us busy!
Pupils participated enthusiastically in a variety of mathematical activities: they watched and participated in a live webinar called" Cuthbert Sees Doubles" by Sally Lunt, took part in the daily number of the Day Quiz, completed a Maths Trail, played maths games with cards and dice and explored number and pattern.

"Science Week"
Infants enjoyed a very busy Science Week.
They loved the controlled EXPLOSIONS mixing bread soda with vinegar to create a gas that burst a sandwich bag. They also mixed coke and mentos together to create a coke and bubble fountain. Later in the week they joined an interactive webinar to take a walk on a beach in Galway and learn about marine life. They were facinated by the hermit crab that lives in abandoned sea shells.

"Inclusion Week"
"Inclusion Week" celebrated all our abilities. It was a very inspiring and positive initiative that placed the emphasis on abilities within any disability. The pupils listened intently to our guest speakers as they told their life stories and spoke about how they had overcome challenges and difficulties.

Experiment to replicate the effect of sugars/acids on our teeth
Infants poured water, milk, orange juice, coke and vinegar over eggs. After a week we examined the changes. The egg covered with water was the only one that did not show any exterior visible change. The others egg shells were either discoloured, softened or disintegrating. The children realised how important it is to brush their teeth as food and liquids can damage teeth.

Marine Week
Pupils successfully complete the Sea Keepers Programme. The Sea Keepers project included six interactive lesson presentations, background information sheets, video links and activities relating to six Irish marine species. In the photos below Infants examine different kinds of seaweed - Bladder wrack, Ribbon sea weed and Sea spaghetti.
They learn that the air filled bladders help the Bladder wrack float and make food.
