Incredible Edibles Gold Award
We enjoyed working on the Incredible programme this year and were delighted to receive the highest award for our class -the Gold Award in recognition of all the work completed on learning about healthy food, where food comes from, and the importance of buying local and Irish food. We were named Incredible School of the Week earlier this year so all in all it was great recognition by the Agri Aware and Bord Bia of the work put in by our class. Well done to all who worked on this particularly when the school was closed.
Sports Day 2021
Meán Fomhair 2020
We were all very excited to get back to school on August 31st. After a long break from school it was great to see all the classrooms filled with happy faces once again. A big welcome to our 5 new friends in First Class-Adam, Finn, Kate, Niall and Tommy-we hope you will love being in our classroom. We were also delighted to welcome a new boy Anthony to 2nd class-we hope you will be very happy in Burgess N.S.
We are enjoying working in our bright freshly painted classroom. We are working hard to keep everything clean and are super good at keeping our hands clean and sanitised.

Outdoor Fun in September Sun
We are spending lots of time outdoor while the weather is good and enjoying playing together on the newly painted yard games. Fergal has been coming to the school every Friday working on hurling skills and we have enjoyed great training sessions.
Abstract Art- Self-portraits
This month we have been working on the theme of Mé Fein in Irish and we enjoyed painting these super colourful abstract portraits. Don't they look great?

First Communion 2020
3rd Class have had to wait a long time to receive their First Holy Communion and the day came quickly upon us in the end on September 20th. We practiced hard in school and at home and and as Fr Jones said on the day they were the 'best prepared class ever having spent 13 months getting ready!' . Excitement levels were rising along with the temperatures the week before. On the day the sun shone brightly , the boys looked dapper in their lovely suits, the girls looked beautiful in their white dresses and the ceremony went without a hitch. Everybody was so proud of our terrific third class on their big day. Congratulations to you all.
Check out the slideshow below for some photos of the preparation and the big day itself.

Deireadh Fómhair 2020
We went on a tree trail for National Tree Day on October 1st. It was fun exploring the trees in our school garden. We went looking for simple, compound and lobed leaves as well as checking out the trunk , bark and branches of the many trees we are lucky enough to have on our school grounds. Check out some tree detectives who made a few good observations and discoveries. We also learned about all the benefits of planting trees.
Siúlóid Dúlra
We have been fortunate enough to have some nice weather to go on an Autumn Walk. Armed with a checklist of things to look for and dressed safely in our high vis we set off exploring. You'll see some photos of us on our walk in the slideshow below.
A Special Visitor to our Class
To our great surprise we had a special visitor to our classroom on 2/10/2020. Look at the faces below as the visitor was gradually unveiled from the bag!!!!
Check out Liam making himself comfortable at Ms Quigley's desk!

Cartographers in Action !!
We are learning about maps in Geography this month and we know that the list of symbols on a map is known as the key or legend. We then drew our own maps and used a secret technique to make theme look like old treasure maps! We will just say it's a good job the teachers drink a lot of tea!!!!!!!!!!
Although it caused Ms Quigley a pain to see people scrunching up the lovely maps you have to admit that they look really good all finished with the aged crumpled look!!!

Cuimilt Duilleoga
We had fun with our Autumn leaves. Is brea linn a bheith ag cuimilt duilleoga.
Ag Priontáil le duilleoga agus le torthaí
Who knew you could get so much fun out of a few leaves? We enjoyed the mess (Sorry Mums and Dads) of leaf and fruit printing last week in Autumn colours. Our classroom is looking decidedly autumnal this week.
Report Writing in October
In October we have been busy writing reports. A good report must have some interesting information for the reader. We started off learning some facts in school about the owl and then we were ready to write our first report. Then we started researching our reports ourselves and gathering facts from reliable sources to write our reports at school. Ms Quigley is so happy with the hard work that every person in our class has put into report writing. She loves to get some WOW facts.
We found out that a group of pandas is called an embarrassment of pandas and a group of owls is known as a parliament of owls.
We also found out that cats play with their prey before they eat it.
And we learned that Dexter cows are the smallest breed in Ireland.
Check out Our Star Writers Display above with examples of our first example of report writing .

Maths Week Fun in our Classroom
We love Maths in our classroom and every October in our school we enjoy Maths week with some daily fun mathematical activities . 2 D shapes were the theme one day and we got to make shapes using geoboards and elastic bands, using geostrips and using the geoboard app on the IPads. We also took some photos of shapes in our environment and posted to seesaw for homework. Lots of photos to check out below.
Traffic Survey
We have been working on Data in Maths in October and on a nice dry Thursday we headed to the M7 motorway bridge to carry out a traffic survey. We made some predictions and estimations before we set off and then completed some tallies on the different vehicles going in the Limerick or Nenagh directions. It was interesting that although we predicetd that there would be more cars than any other vehicle this was not the case. There were far more lorries on the road than cars..... Can you guess why?? ....................It might have something to do with a horrible and nasty virus that is keeping many people at home in 2020
Scarecrow Art
Picture the scene................paint, a mountain of fabric, card, a bucket of sticky pva glue, a big bag of straw and 23 very enthusiastic children....... what could possibly go wrong??!!!
Safe to say Ms. Quigley looked like the biggest scarecrow on two feet at the end of our Fabric and Fibre Art Class!!!!
But the finished scarecrows definitely look well worth the effort!

You On the final day of half-term a scary gang of dead hurlers, dead gymnasts, draculas, skeletons, witches, dead carpenters, dead farmers, zombies and even a dead Wally took over our class and embarked on our hallowe'en maths trail around the school. Great fun was had by everybody and it has to be said that the scary crew were very maths smart!
HELP....... THE SCHOOL HAS BEEN TAKEN OVER!!!
Happy Hallowe'en Everybody-Have a lovely mid-term break.
Samhain 2020
Every November we spend a few minutes each day remembering friends and family who are no longer with us but looking down on us from heaven. We wrote the names of our loved ones on flowers for our display.
Thank You to Rang 3
3rd Class received a card from The Ark in University Hospital Limerick following their generous donation to them following their First Holy Communion. They were delighetd to buy some books with our donation and sent us a loevly Thank You Card with a photo of their new books.
Symmetrical Art
We have been learning about symmetry in Maths and we finished the topic with some nice symmetrical paintings.
Zooming in Science Week 2020
So much has changed in 2020 including how we have all discovered how Zoom, Facetime and Skype help us to communicate in a socially distanced world. For Science Week this year 3rd Class got the job of researching a famous scientist and delivering an oral report to Ms Costello's class via Zoom. It was great fun zooming the Infants once the two teachers got the call set up with the help of technical expert Olivia!
We always look forward to a visit from 'Uncle Shane the Scientist' to our school when he can get a chance to do some demonstrations with us. This year due to Covid restrictions he could not visit us but he kindly provided Michael and Grace with the materials and instructions to do some demos in his absence. This piece of apparatus made by Shane demonstrates how sound moves in waves. Thank you so much Shane for always supporting us in our scientific endeavors in school.
The pictures below demonstrate an experiment we carried out to indicate the presence of bacteria on our hands. Such an important lesson in our new regime of good hand hygiene.
We had to design and build boats using plasticine, checked if they floated (we didn't want any Titanics!!) and tested which boats would hold the most passengers (ceramic baking beads). We had one successful boat!!! We might wait a while before going boat building!!

Stone Age History
In SESE we have been learning about the Stone Age and contrary to what it may seem like Ms Quigley was not around for it!! It began about 8000 BC when the first hunter-gatherers came to Ireland from Britain. We have read lots about how hunter gatherers lived, looked at some cave paintings, learned about middens, discovered how they wasted nothing and even read about their version of disposable nappies ( not the most comfortable!!!)
We discovered facts, wrote reports, made some stone age clay pots in pottery class and re-created ancient cave paintings.
Eugene, being very creative, made some stone age tools and weapons as early hunter-gatherers would have done more than 10, 000 years ago.
All in all a great unit of work by everyone.

Hurling with Stephen
We are delighetd to have Burgess nurler Stephen Kirwan coaching us every Tuesday on GAA skills. Stephen is helping build up our roll lifting, jab lifting, hand passing, blocking and hooking skills. This is a great opportunity to develop hand eye co-ordination, balance and general fitness. We look forward to the sessions every Tuesday.

Garda Finnerty collected our cards as part of the Community Santa Initiative to distribute to elderly people in the community to spread some Christmas cheer during the loneliness of the restrictions due to Covid 19.
P.E. ClassesWe have been developing our Fundamental Movement Skills in P.E this term-and worked on the the skills of hopping, side-stepping and running sine Hallowe'en. We have been lucky to be able to continue our P.E. outside most weeks this term and as the gallery below shows we really enjoy P.E. class and are usually out of breath afterwards!!
A Winter WalkWe went for our winter walk in some crisp December sunshine to observe seasonal change. What never changes is the generosity of our neighbours when they hear us walking past with Bridget popping out to say Hello and to give us a big box of chocolates to share when we got back to the classroom.
Can you spot somebody guarding the chocs below? Go raibh míle maith agat Bridget. Winter LandscapesWe painted Winter landscapes working on perspective with our winter trees.
A Big Surprise in the Post !!Christmas is a very busy one for 'Fear an Phoist' and last Friday we got a huge surprise when our 'Fear an Phoist' Anthony had a special delivery for us. We have been busy writing letters since in November and December to the residents in Ashlawn Nursing Home. to a celebrity of our choice, to Father O' Brien and then finally to the big man in the red suit himself-Santa.
Of course a huge part of the excitement of letter writing is when you get a reply and Anthony had a big surprise for us with some lovely postcards from the residents in Ashlawn Nursing home. last week We were so excited to hear from them and we were really interested to hear about their lives. Then the excitement continued on Monday with a lovely email from Father O' Brien who was delighted to hear from us also. A HUGE thank you to everybody for taking the time to write back to us. In our digital age of social media and instant messaging we all agree that it remains hard to beat the excitement of a personal reply in writing delivered by the ever- reliable Postman. Angels making Angels! |
|
Christmas is a fun time to do some extra art classes and this year has been no exception. We have been creating our masterpieces using paint, ribbon, pipe cleaners, doilies, card and glue.
Of course no Christmas art class is complete without a good sprinkle of glitter and we all know that glitter goes everywhere!!!
See if you can recognise our 'glitterfied' angels below!

Letters to Santa
To finish the 'Writing to Socialise' writing genre we have written the most important December letters-to Santa. We did our best writing in these letters and one of Santa's robins actually flew in one day to see us hard at work so Ms Quigley is very confident that Santa will make some great deliveries to the wonderful letter writers in our class!
Christmas Fun
There is no question that a worldwide pandemic would stop our usual Christmas fun and mayhem as we count down to the big day. In the absence of some traditional events that make up the Christmas experience in schools we have been doing more art than usual and Mums and Dads will nearly need a trailer to bring it all home next week. We have made decorations, cards, rudolphs, santas, cribs and we aren't finished yet! We have used paint, glue, card, marbling inks, tissue paper, felt, thread, sequins, many googley eyes and lots and lots of glitter. It makes for busy happy hands at work.
Check out the slideshow below to get a sense of how busy we have been.

Quest for Jingle
On Friday 18th with the benefit of technology we were beamed into Draíocht theatre in Blanchardstown to enjoy a festive Christmas show called Quest for Jingle. We went on a Chrsitams musical adventure enjoying music from France, Africa and then a trip closer to home for the Dingle polka before finishing off with everyone's favourite Jingle Bells.

January 2021
We were disappointed not be be able to return to school after Christmas but as always we faced the challenge of learning at home like the troopers that we are. We will be see-sawing together over and back for the next few weeks until we get the green light to return to school.
As before kitchen tables have been transformed into learning environments with the new Múinteoirí at the helm at home. As well as the usual Irish, English and Maths, Week 1 brought many fun activities including lots of STEM challenges, 3D shape hunts and shape making both in yoga and with paper and sellotape!!!!!.
We made 3D names, animal enclosures, we floated boats and played shape dominoes.
We created Winter landscape art and had a scéal greannmhar ar an Aoine.
Ms Quigley has had to very rapidly get over her fear of the RECORD button and has been busy making videos all week so we can continue working successfully on our Gaeilge and Maths.
See the slideshow below of a sample of Week 1 activities.

Week 1 of Distance Learning 11/1/2021- 15/1/2021
Week 2 18/1/2021-22/1/2021
This week we continued with the distance learning and we 'zoomed ' up a gear or 10!!! In a state of excitement (and a little nervous trepidation on the part of Ms Quigley) we were thrilled with a virtual catch up this week. Our time literally 'zoomed' by but it was lovely to see so many smiling faces as part of our adventure with technology. We will all be experts after this!
Activities this week had us making a marble maze, drawing The White House (for the week that was in it) hearing the story of the life of Annie Moore, singing Isle of Hope, taking a virtual tour of Ellis Island, enjoying 'Am Scéalaíochta' ar an Aoine leis an bPíobaire as well as the daily Irish, English and Maths. And to finish it all we had an energetic dance in PE to the song 'I'm still Standing'!!!
Ms Quigley is (barely ) still standing after a busy week seesawing but she is happy to report that we did a great week of work at home. Well done and roll on week 3-a week nearer to getting back to school.

.......................the learning continues.
Tháinig an sneachta i rith an deireadh seachtaine and we woke up to a crisp winter morning on Monday 25th to start our week. We had Catholic Schools Week this week with some daily activities and stories from the Bible which culminated with us doing something special for our Grandparents to mark Grandparent's Day.
A busy week had us taking winter photographs, going on a winter walk to check out nature around us, building bridges, making bird feeders, completing brd surveys as well as daily Irish, English and Maths. We zoomed our way through some English activities, we had Irish 'zoom beirte ' , we played Tables Bingo on zoom and just had great fun catching up with one another.
It looks like we must continue the learning at home for another little while so we welcome Spring next Monday-with longer brighter days ahead.
Well done to everybody and the múinteoirí at home on another very successful week seesawing. Thank you for sending in such a wide variety of photographs and videos of your work. It is wonderful to see you all in action at Home.

St Bridgid’s Day 1/2/2021
We made St Brigid’s crosses for our homes, sang a song to Brigid and heard the story of her cloak. St Brigid was a wonderful kind woman who loved nature and took care of the sick people. We need her care more than ever at this time.
Week 4 1/2/2021-5/2/2021
Week 4 heralded the start of Spring and we look forward to brighter days ahead. We started the week learning about St Brigid who made crosses from rushes and ended the week taking clock selfies using our tablets-that's the difference approx 1500 years makes!!
We built towers as tall as ourselves as part of our STEM challenges this week, we learned a lot about telling the time, we had calves and lambs on the farm and birds at the bird feeders . We continued with the Incredible Edibles tasks this week and Ms Quigley got videos that the marketing department in Bord Bia would snap up if they hot to see them...... MS Q could do with getting some lessons in front of the camera from her pupils.
Another week of great work by everybody. Check out some photos of people hard at work at home.

Congratulations to an Incredible Class.
What a wonderful email to receive last week that we were named Incredible School of the week for the work undertaken by our class in the Incredible Edibles challenges since the school closed. There are currently more than 25,000 pupils in Ireland working on theses challenges and it was our small but incredible school was the one chosen across all of Ireland.
Thanks to all who submitted photos, videos and completed the challenges at home. I am so proud of all of you.

March gets us back to the Classroom. Hip Hip Hurray!!
It was with great joy we got the news from An Taoiseach Micheál Martin that we would be returning to school on March 1st . People worked so hard at home but it we all missed one another and we missed being in school so we were all very happy to return.
It was a busy return to school with Engineers Week, World Book Day, Seachtain na Gaeilge, St Patrick's Day and Mother's Day all happening within days of one another! We presented our projects on China that we had been working on at home. We made some nice Irish wreaths for St Patrick’s Day and watched some webinars from the Explorium. Check out the gallery of photos below to get a sense of how busy we have been.
Happy Mother's Day 2021
Mums all over Ireland probably got the best present ever when the schools opened just in time for Mother's Day. We were delighted to make cards on our first week back to celebrate our wonderful Mums.

Incredible Edibles 12/3/2021
Following on our success of being Incredible Edible School of the week last month we embarked on the next task-that of planting those incredible edible vegetables. We planted seed potatoes, strawberry plants, spinach, lettuce, carrots and chives. We have them in our classroom as the spring frost lingers and look forward to planting them out in our raised bed next month.
Learning about China
China was our SESE country study at home when the school was closed. We learned how Chinese people celebrate the Chineses New Year, we watched the story of The Great Race, we explored the Great wall through virtual websites, we learned lots of facts about Giant Pandas and the bamboo forests, some of us tasted Chinese food, we heard the Chinese legend of the Willow Pattern, did lots of art based on the theme and we all learned many many facts about this very interesting country. We completed projects about China that we brought to school for our display area. People brought in Chinese souvenirs , scarves, willow pattern pottery to name but a few of the items on our diplay. It looks amazing and there is so much to explore at on it.
Siúlóid Dúlra
With lovely weather welcoming us back to school we took off on the roads for a lovely Spring walk. As always the ditches and fields around Burgess are full of new life and we spotted many of the signs of spring as you can see on the slideshow below. We also have a lovely Spring area in in our classroom with lots of healthy tadpoles growing before our eyes. Jean and Ms Quigley are hoping for at least 2 handsome princes from the future frogs!!!

Our classroom is resembling a giant greenhouse with our spring areas bursting with new life! Thanks to Darragh and Niall for keeping the plants watered and the tadpoles monitored during the Easter holidays. We are ready to plant out our Incredible Edible fruit and vegetables shortly once the frost has gone as we know that seeds and young plants need warmth. We planted more vegetables on the first day back to school and we will be keeping a record of the star grower each week. Hopefully we will some lovely summer salad to look forward to! Thanks to Anna for helping us today with our planting.

Grow Garden Grow.
What excitement on April 23rd when our new polytunnel/green house arrived on site. This will give us a chance to develop our green fingers and growing skills. Having planted lots of seeds this term that had germinated in the classrrom they were ready to be transplanted to their new home. We will keep monitoring theor porgress in their nice new warm home!
The raised beds were looking rather sad so we hope that our wildflower seeds will transform them over the new few months. Keep checking in for the progress update!

Farm Safe Schools
We are reaching the end of the modules and Ms Quigley has prepared a logbook of our work. She was so lucky to have so many videos and photos to include from all the wonderful things she got on seesaw. We hope to receive news in June that we are considered a Farm Safe School in Burgess. All information relating to this programme is included on a separate webpage on our school website if you want to check it out for a full read. The video below sums up our journey

Incredible Edibles
Making the Headlines for Healthy Eating Week
We are continuing the Incredible Edibles journey in May with all our fruit and vegetables planted in the greenhouse. We learned about healthy eating and held Healthy Eating week in school where we were encouraged to eat a rainbow of fruit and vegetable daily. It was a challenge but one that many people rose to. We were delighted to get a Shout Out from the Incredibles team in their newsletter. Well done to everybody who got involved with the healthy eating at home. We hope to build good habits for life with this initiative.

We were delighted to have a lovely teacher Miss Creamer working in our classroom for the month of May. We really enjoyed her time with us and we were sorry to see her go.
Summer is on the way
We changed our hyacinths and tulips for daisies and sunflowers and our spring frieze became a summer frieze! Check out our colourful display below. Roll on those long summer days that we all love.
Farm Safe Schools Congratulations!
We were thrilled to hear that Darragh and Niall got 2 Munster regional awards from Agri-aware to thank them for their work and especially for organising the farm visit for us. Congrats boys.
This award was also in recognition of the work completed by the class for the Farm Safe Schools programme. We also got a special shout out from Alma during the last webinar-How exciting.

Making Healthy Smoothies in School
As part of Healthy Eating week we explored recipes at home to make healthy snacks using a rainbow of fruits and vegetables. In school after we had harvested some of our spinach we got to make smoothies using fresh Irish ingredients for a healthy and refreshing drink. We had to read the recipe , measure the ingredients and follow the steps to make this glass of goodness. Cheers everyone!!
Congratulations to Second Class
The children in 2nd Class have been working so hard to prepare for their First Communion and the first step on that journey is First Confession. Since we could not have a little party after the church we celebrated in school next day with a surprise party in the sun. We are looking forward to the next big occasion and are working hard in school and at home to be ready when the time is right.
It was business as usual next day as we got down to the task of harvesting the spinach to make smoothies in school!

Our Class Olympics
With the Olympics of 2020 cancelled we are looking forward to tuning into the Tokyo games next month. In prepartion for this we have been learning some facts about the history and origin of the Olympic games. To take this theme a little further we planned and held our own class olynpics in June. We held a survey on which countries we would like to represnt and the results were as follows: Ireland, Australia, Spain, France, America and Japan. For the opeing ceremony we had to use the ipads to prepare and present a short project on our country. We decided we would hold Track and Field, Basketball, Soccer and a wide variety of novelty events so our games would be great fun for everyone in the June sunshine!
See the slide show below for the project preparation in action!

We went to the yard daily for the last week in school to hold the events and points were awarded to each team. Great fun was had by all.
The Closing Ceremony of our Olympics!
We went back to the IPads to prepare for the closing ceremony. We had a colourful and lively closing ceremnoy which included among many other things Irish dancing, Spanish dancing, French folk music and dance, the cup song and an aboriginal raising form the dead! Super creativity from the whole class. Well done
Sports Day June 2021
Always a June highlight and definitely one of the things we all missed in 2020 so we were thrilled when the sun shone for our schools sports day. As well as Rody and Martin helping us we were delighted to have some of our past pupils help out on the day. Wonderful sporting fun in the sun. We all slept soundly that night!!!
Organic Delights from our school.
We have had great fun developing our gardening skills in our polytunnel this term and as holidays approached it was time for a harvest. We went home armed with fresh vegetables- we may have to ask Mrs Long if we can set up a market stall next year!! With the way our vergetables were growing Ms Quigley was expeecting to see a beanstalk some morning bursting through the roof !!!
Slán Rang 3
Sadly the time has come for the wonderful Rang 3 to spread ther wings and take off to bigger and better things in the Senior Classroom. You have been a pleasure to work with for the past 3 years and Jean and myself look forward to hearing great things about you as you move forward. Thanks for the memories and check out the short video below for a look back on just a few of our many activities together, Go neirí an t-ádh libh i gcónaí.
Schools out for Summer
Hard to belive that another year has gone. You have all been brilliant at the handwashing, the cleaning, the social distancing, the chats about the rules, the pods , the bubbles, Seesaw, online learning, zoom and all the new things that you had to face this year as we stamped out COVID 19. All this was extra to the usual things that you are brilliant at each year. Thank you for being so good and responsible and for working so hard at home when you had to and I hope you all have a wonderful break. Look forward to hearing about your adventures on September 1st. Maybe you will get a chance to visit some fo the places we have learned about in SESE ? Who knows??
Stay Safe and Have Fun Everyone.
